I have SBS2003 and 1 laptop, and one desktop on the network, 2 nics, etc.  Everything works great.  I use PSK WEP for the wireless security.

Whenever I have a friend over who may want to use my network, I add the computer name to the domain under SBS2003 and add the WEP settings to the laptop so it can access the wireless network.  The laptop will show that it is trying to acquire an IP address but will never find it.  I assume this is because I need to add the laptop to the domain using http://sbsservername/connectcomputer/.  I do this but it can't find the web page.

Beyond this, is there an easier way to have people beable to use my wireless internet access without having to add thier computer on the domain?

There must be something in the Wireless device that does not permit the laptop to get an IP address from the server. You really need to look in to that issue first. If you try to set the Access Point without any security at all does the laptop get an IP address from the server? If that works then you have the answer where the problem is. Take a look at the manual of the Access Point and the Wireless Card the laptop uses. There are PCMCIA devices or wireless network cards that don't do WEP very good, at least at 128 bits encryption that can cause problems. You could also try to set encryption to a lower level.

Your second question if you need to create an account for that laptop. That all depends on the level of security you need and want on your server. You can still create a user account for your friend and not join the laptop to the domain. By every share your friends laptop connects on the server he will be prompted for user credentials.

My network has a wireless access point. I have had endless hours of fun trying to get a Toshiba tablet to communicate with the AP using anything more sophisticated than 64 bit WEP. The card/driver combo would quietly refuse to communicate at the end of the association/authentication process -- leaving me with a seemingly successful connection but no access to the network. Endless combinations of settings on the AP and tablet produced nothing -- just an apparently successful connection that failed to get a DHCP address (or communicate with a staticly defined address). What made it most interesting is that none of this failure gets logged anywhere. My solution was to add a PCMCIA wireless card with more contemporary roots -- the extra hardware is not easy on the battery but provides the security requried. The wireless is using WPA with Radius (IAS), which works very nicely. I dont mind setting up guest accounts for visitors -- if they cannot get access due to weirdness there are spare wirelsss cards.
