Would someone please explain the "wake up" feature on workstations.

My bios has an option to "wake up" and I have seen Nic cards that support this feature.

How does it work?  Does the computer have to be on and then instead of shutting down, just go into hibernate, or standby?  Or will the computer turn on ever if it is off?

Thanks
George

Most of the time this feature in the Bios does not do any good if you do not have the appropriate nic with it. Check what kind of a Nic you and if it supports 'wake on lan'.

What you can do with this feature is to 'wake up' the workstation from a remote location. Imagine the administrator needs to do something on a particular workstation and it is turned of. The administrator will be able to boot the workstation even if it is shutdown by a user at the end of the day. It does not matter if the computer is hibernating, standby or shutdown.

I checked my nic cards with Dell and the nic cards do have the Wake up Feature;  however, the coputers are not responding when they are turned off.

Do I need to do something else at the server like give the workstation a static ip address?  I saw this feature is available on the manage client computers/properties/dial in.

What should I check to get this feature working?  The Bios is turned on to wake up and I flashed the Bios to update to the newest firmware.

Thanks
George
