Hi everybody,

Just a quick question about Client OS Service Packs.  On my SBS2003 Server, updated to SP1 finally (Thanks, M&M), all is well.  Created a 'Test' User along with a 'Test' laptop (initial build is XP Pro, no SP, no Apps) and joined the SBS domain, no bother.  The Client Setup Wizard kicked in and proceeded to go through the Application Setup, as advertised.  Having updated the server to SP1, I watched the installation process for all of 5 minutes - just to make sure it actually was running.  However, when I returned some 4 hours later, the installation progress is 'complete' (as in the green dotted line is all the way to the right) but the menu is still on Client Operating System Servcie Packs; HDD activity is virtually nil (an odd flash once and a while), there is no LAN activity showing on the Network icon in the Sys Tray and Task Manager shows about 2% on CPU usage, System Idle Process at 98-99% and Client Setup Wizard still running.  The server itself is showing a flash or two of network activity occassionally, but I would expect that.  Task Manager is running about 3-5% - again, fairly normal  I knew it was going to take a little while for XP SP2 to come down, but this is ridiculous!  Has anybody any offers as to why this appears to have 'stuck' or does it really take 'forever'?  I'm going to leave it overnight to see what happens - maybe it does take a very, very long time!

Thanks in advance for any information.

Regards
Pete

Can you look into the logs on that client? Anything there?

Thanks for coming back so quickly, Mariette.  No there doesn't look like there is anything 'adverse' in the laptop logs, although in System there are several entries for Event ID 29 - W32Time, no time source is currently accessible.  The Apps log only shows events up to 2055 (it's now 2326).  The server's logs are clear except for SUS service complaining about having nothing to sync - but then I haven't sync'd it with MS yet.  I was going to do that overnight.  It seems very wierd that the laptop logs stop at 2055 though.  Do you think a reboot of the laptop is in order?  Do you know whether the laptop will allow the client setup 'take up from where it left off' or is it a case of 'tear it down and start again'?
Pete.

That is strange that you get w32time related errors. That makes me think that something went wrong when you joined the laptop. Did the laptop booted twice after you joined it to the Lan? What is the source of error 2055 and 2326? I think you need to reboot the laptop and please post the errors from the event log and please, post an ipconfig /all from the server and the client. An ipconfig /all is created from the command. Click Start -> Run and type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig /all > ip.txt. Please, post the contents of the ip.txt in our forum.

No, the laptop has not rebooted, even though I chose the auto reboot on the initial setup.  The source of the errors is W32Time.  Even more odd, did the ipconfig/all and redirected the output to iplap.txt.  Tried to copy it across to the server (where I'm typing from now) and I've been told that 'The domain is not accessible. You do not have permission to use this network resource. Contact your network administrator'!!!!  That's obviously why the App set up has 'stalled'.  But I'm still connected to the LAN through DHCP and I can map drives to the server. But why would the laptop (and it's recognised user) suddenly NOT have access to the network through explorer?  It all started off OK and nobody has been near the server or laptop all night - I've been here reading and listening to my tunes!  There are NO policies in place that deviate from SBS standard (with the except of the SUS policies, created using the MS advertised method).  The even more daft thing is that I can access the company web site over the LAN and post to the 'General Documents'! How odd is that?  I'm going to have to look at this more closely tomorrow.  I must be missing something really obvious or I am being particularly dull tonight.  Think I'll probably take your advice and reboot.  If it all goes wrong, hey, no bother, after all, it's only a 'Test' laptop and account - no data involved at all.
Thanks again, Mariette.
Regards,
Pete

Hi Pete,

Ipconfigs are looking good, although you can delete the WINS on the external nic. If the laptop after the reboot is still having a problem, check the date and time. The time can only be some 5 minutes off from the time on the server.

Hi, everybody,
Well it works.  I can't offer an answer to the problem as initially presented, but a trash & rebuild of the laptop and a re-join to the domain worked.  It is becoming apparent that building and configuring SBS2003 Servers and clients requires far more attention to detail than before and is a far more precise exercise.  I think it might have something to do with MS tightening up security all round, I don't know.  Would be interested to hear other people's opinion on this.  Once again, thanks to all who either answered the various forums or emailed me.  Here's to the next opportunity & challenge!
Regards,
Pete
