I have a SBS2003 Premium install.  In the active directory I have setup two new OUs - one called SBSComputers and one called SBSLaptops.  These are located below the MyBusiness Computers OU.

To the SBSComputers OU I have attached a Group Policy Template - "Desktop My Documents Policy" which tells windows to use folder redirection to get the desktop to look to \\sbs-server\users\%username% for my documents.

To the SBSLaptops OU I have attached a Group Policy Template - "Laptop My Documents Policy" which tells windows to use folder redirection to get the desktop to look to %USERPROFILE%\My Documents for my documents.

I have run the gpresult on both desktops and workstations and it appears as though the correct policies are being applied.  However the my documents folder redirection isn't working.  Regardless of whether the machine is a laptop or a desktop, everything continues to point to %USERPROFILE%\My Documents.

I have tried to use the SBS folder redirection wizard in the Server Management console, however when I run this and create a separate policy for laptops, everything looks at \\sbs-server\users\%username% for documents, even the laptops.
Any one got any advice?

Kind regards,

Kris

Do you try that with different users on a laptop or a desktop?

I have tried with several users.  I am unable to add the users to different OUs as all users access the laptops at different times.  The machines are in different OUs.

The odd behaviour happens regardless of who logs in to the machine.

Kind regards,

Kris

I forgot to add that this odd behaviour happens on all the machines I've logged in to (we have 3 laptops experiencing the problem) and 10 desktops.

Hi Kris,

Have you checked the eventlogs on those clients and the server? What does RSOP.msc on the clients give?

Could your problem be due to the order in which policies are applied? I think computer policies are applied first followed by user policies. Thus a user policy would take precedence over a computer policy. This would explain why all computers redirect to the server when you use My Documents folder redirecton since this is a user policy.

Sorry for the delayed response, I have been busy setting up a new branch office and haven't had time to track down the cause of this problem?  I will run RSOP today and post the results.

In the meantime I am not sure if the problem is that the user policies are being applied after the machine ones, because I have setup a separate OU for laptops and only enabled folder redirection on the OU that contains the desktop machines; the laptops are in their own OU without folder redirection and the server is in yet another OU which has folder redirection disabled.

This one is a real nuisance, so if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can selectively enable folder redirection only on certain machines I'd be grateful to hear them!

Thanks,
Kris

Have you seen Desktop Authority from Scriptlogic? We use it for folder redirection and are fully satisfied. Its an alternative to using common GPO but, of course, you can use them both. The main feature that with validation logic of DA you will be able to apply all of the settings with the most granular way. You will have more than 20 different criterias to select the necessary machine or user for your settings. http://www.scriptlogic.com/products/DesktopAuthority/
