An XP Pro Workstation on an SBS 2003 Standard network has started giving the following error when a logon attempt to the network is made: "The current time on this computer and the current time on the network are different. Please contact your network administrator". Prior to this the workstation has been  trouble free since installation about two months ago . No errors seen in the server event logs. Other workstations are ok. I looked or a KB on this and couldn't find one. Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks,
Sam

There good be many reasons for this. If the workstation is turned off at night and the battery is not really good it will loose time and that will prevents you from logging on to the server. The Kerberos security mechanism prevents devices to log on to the server if there is a big time difference. You can try to set the clock manually as close as possible to the time on the server and try to log on.

Thanks,

I tried logging on as a local administrator and setting the clock to match that of the server and then rebooted. Same problem. I am puzzled. I have several SBS networks and a lot of workstations and have never seen this before.

Hi Sam,

Issue the following commands from the commandline on that client:
net time /setsntp:servername
w32tm /resync

From now on, that client should sync the time automagically with the server.

Thanks for the reply. The answer to my problem was simple once I got on site. I had tried to resolve the users problem remotely by asking the user to logon locally and check the time setting on the workstation. They did and the time setting was ok. Later that day I stopped by the site and checked myself. The time setting was ok. The date setting was exactly one month off. Focusing in on time I hadn't thought to ask the user about the date! I set the correct date and resolved the problem.

Hi there,

I am experiencing the same issue, however, synchronising the time does not seem to make any difference. I set the time on client to be same as other client that logs on fine. Also, difference between client and server was nly 30 secs. Other clients without issues have bigger time difference! Also no issue with the date

Can't seem to run net time /setsntp:servername, says "net" is not a valid command. I am probably missing something very basic here but it doesn't do it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Hi Rene,

If you can't run the 'net' command, something is terribly wrong. Can you try it from the \windows\system32 folder?

I've just had this problem with one of our PC's here and on investigation found that the problem was there was no %systemroot%\windows reference in the path statement... So the logon script can't find cmd.exe on the local PC when it runs...
