Hello,

We have an odd problem on our SBS network.  The two computers that we have connected cannot access the web via IE if the SBS proxy is active.  Firefox has access, but not IE.  As soon as we shutoff the proxy settings in IE, then it (and other programs like Google Earth, for example, work fine).

We are using SBS2K3 Standard with no ISA.

Should we not use the proxy?  If so, where do we check the access privileges for client computers?

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Please, post an ipconfig /all from the server and a workstation. Open a command prompt by opening Start -> Run from the Start Menu and type cmd. From the command prompt type ipconfig /all >ip.txt. Attach this file to your answer.

Did you add the users with the 'add user' wizard on the SBS and did you join those computers with the 'connectcomputer' wizard?

Jeff,

You wrote that you do not have ISA installed. I don't understand what you mean with setting a proxy? What proxy and where?

OK, I read your post again. If you don't have ISA installed you should not set any proxy at all. The fact that Firefox works when you set a proxy has probably to do with the fact that Firefox tries to find the proxy and if it does not it will be turned off.

Hmm...now you are making me think.

We had installed ISA2004 to try it on our network, but did not get it configured and working correctly, so we uninstalled (this is our own network, so we thought we would try it, but didn't have enough time to configure it correctly based on your expert links, but it's on our list!).

So, could installing it and uninstalling it leave a GPO setting in the 'connectcomputer' that would activate the proxy on the workstations incorrectly?  If so, it seems we can either shut it off on the workstation, or maybe there is a place we can modify the GPO.

Does that make any sense?

Thanks again!

Yes, the proxy settings could still be in some place. You can run a rsop on the server for that workstations and see where that settings comes from. I am not 100% sure it is a GPO, have a look and check that. It could also be in a file called 'install.ins' in the \\servername\clients\setup folder on your server.

I'll check the install.ins and report back what I find (although it might be the contents of the file if I don't get what it says!

Also, what is rsop?

I see the install.ins file.  Can I open it with Notepad?

Ignore that last reply.  Here's the Proxy section from install.ins:

[Proxy]
HTTP_Proxy_Server=http://SBS:8080
FTP_Proxy_Server=http://SBS:8080
Gopher_Proxy_Server=http://SBS:8080
Secure_Proxy_Server=http://SBS:8080
Socks_Proxy_Server=
Use_Same_Proxy=1
Proxy_Enable=1
Proxy_Override=
AutoDetect=0

Should I switch Proxy_Enable=1 to Proxy_Enable=0?

Yes, and delete the http://SBS:8080. Just leave that empty. As soon as you setup a new client it will not set a proxy anymore

BTW, rsop means 'Resultant Set Of Policies'. You can run that on a client and it will give you a report on all the policies applied to a client. Very handy for troubleshooting. Give it a try, it is only reporting.
