Hi,

I am loosing my hairs on this one ...

This site has about 20 PCs. A few of them have an intermittent problem: a dozen services will not start when the computer is started. Here is a list of the services affected:
"Automatic Updates"
"Security Center"
"Computer Browser"
"DHCP Client"
"Workstation"
"Server"
"Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"
"Wireless Zero Configuration"
"Windows Time"
"Distributed Link Tracking Client"
"System Restore Service"
"Secondary Logon"
"HID Input Service"
"Error Reporting Service"
"Logical Disk Manager"
"Cryptographic Services"
This creates many problems like if the Computer Browser is not started users cannot browse the network ... quite critical!!!

If I try to start the services manually, most services will start, but often one or 2 services like the Security Center will not start at all, however how many times I try to quick start them. It usually winges about a group policy preventing the service from strating (I don't fiddle with Group Policies)

To fix the problem, the user reboots the computer several times and then ... bingo, the problem goes away (sometimes after 3 reboots, sometimes only 48 hours later), all the services are starting well, and I don't hear any complains from the users for several days or several weeks. Then the problem comes back.

We recently got 7 new computers. I created a standard image and used an imaging application to apply the image to all 7 computers. 3 of these 7 PCs have this problem regularly but the other 4 PCs don't.

I looked at common characteristics, and don't see anything obvious. For example, these services do not all depend of the same service. There are no erros in the event logs.

The only common characteristics is that the PCs that fail are all Acer. But not all Acer have that problem. None of the Dell have that problem (touch wood). A PC either has that problem intermittently or doesn't not all.

I called Acer Tech Support and was told to re-install the OS from scratch. Which I did with some success ... for some weeks until the problem came back again.

Any suggestion how I can solve or even investigate this?

Thanks for your feedback

Hi Marina,

Thanks for following this up!

Yes I did. See http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=53&forumid=23&postid=62726&view=topic

I resolved this issue a while ago. After talking with the computer supplier, with software vendors, with tech support, after asking questions on newsgroups and on web sites like this one, the solution to the problem was simple:

I only had to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version. This resolved all the intermitent networking issues I mentioned above.

Hope it helps someone else.

Cheers

Alexandre Michel
