The CEO of a company that I have installed SBS 2003 R2 in presented me with his laptop today and asked me to log it into the network.
It runs Windows XP Media edition. I tried http://SBSServer/ConnectComputer but it returned an error and did not join the network. Itried to join the laptop to the network manually but noticed that it only seemed to be set up to work in a peer - peer network and that all thge domain type buttons were disabled. Is this a feature of Windows XP media edition?
I tried looking on the Microsoft SBS 2003 website the OS wasn't mentioned in the workstation compatability list.
Now when I try and logon there is an extra user called _sbs_netsetup that requires a password. I've tried all the usual suspects but nothing lets me in.

| Media Edition is supposed to based on XP Pro...so I thought that it could login to the domain. I will have to look at my computer tonight since its an Media Center as well. I know I can login to a network via VPN. As for the SBS_Netsetup user, that is from the connectcomputer wizard which probably means that the wizard did not finish. You may want to look for a log file (search for the latest one) and find out what the errors are. |

Hi Marina,
Don't quite understand what you mean here. Do you mean that if Media Centre is already installed on the client then you cannot join that client to the domain? Is there some custom install that you can do for Media edition that allow this? I shall check the logs and see where it failed in the installation.
Regards,
Neil

| I forgot to look....sorry....but if Marina says its not possible then there is no sense in me looking. If he wants to keep Media Center then upgrade him to Vista Ultimate (unless that cannot connect either) |

neil, i have MCE 2005 connected to my domain, MCE is based on xp pro, if you used the first MCE disk to install and use a XP pro coa then it will install XP Pro, i know as i have done it as my xp pro media was damaged, search the most popular search engine in the world for "joining mce 2005 to a domain registry key" you will find thousands of hits, the reason it was neutered was that you cant use extenders with domain credentials so you need to be aware of this before you do it, however your laptop user could have local use for when doing this and domain use when working,
HTH more than the answers before,
