Here is my network:

SBS 2003 Standard R2, full updates
Single NIC on SBS connected to the net as follows:

T1 feed---->Linksys Router   -------->  Linksys Switch  ----> to workstations
                  |                |                                     ----> to Linksys WAP
             SBS Server  NAS Device

From the router, I connect the server, NAS, and Switch.  From the switch, wire the workstations and WAP.
SBS server is doing DHCP
Using 'POP3 connector' for Exchange email
14 users & computers are setup and connected to the Domain

Domain name: [abc.local]
Workgroup Name: [abc]

I have four other PCs that are used for CNC machining.  (3-XPPro-, 1-Win2K)  They are on wireless connections and only need FULL access to a single AutoCAD folder.  Right now I have them configured for a "Workgroup" of the same name as the Domain.   Mapped directly to the AutoCAD folder on SBS server, from each CNC PC.  (needed to login as admin to complete the mapping)  Users can see the files, but cannot open them due to permissions I believe.

My question is what is the best practice to give them access to these files?  I don't need to join them to the SBS domain as they do not need email, sharepoint, printing, etc., just access to these job files.  And the fact that these PC are integrated and running a cable to actually 'Join' the SBS domain is all but impossible.  On the old 'wired' Peer-to-Peer network they had access.

How do I give them rights and permissions when they are not actually logged into the ABC domain?

They need full rights to all files in this AuotCAD folder, without giving them the keys to the server!

Thanks!!

Whenever you bring non-authenticated users onto a domain you compromise security. The solution is to change the permission on the folder to "Everyone" Full Access. or maybe read/write. When you do that, you let Everyone in. That is the compromise in security. Anyone that can get access to your system is going to be able to access that folder. If that is not a problem, you should be good to go. They may be asked for domain credentials the first time they try to access it.

Thanks Stan, That is what I was looking for.

I have now mapped a drive on this Win2K client to the share folder on the SBS server. For some reason the user needs to actually click on the mapped drive link to actually open the file 'before' the application that is accessing this data can see the contents. The mapped drive will have a red 'X' on the Mapped drive in Windows Explorer.

But when it is clicked on, it opens just fine and everything is available. This is a Win2K box accessing the SBS 2003 R2 server. This system is shut down every night and rebooted eveyday. After boot up & logon, the map will have a red 'x', once the mapped drive is accessed in the morning, it works fine all day.

If the map is not accessed the software, (an AutoCAD applet) will not see the data it needs to see.

Any ideas??

You ,ight try a "net use" command in the SBS login script to map that drive automatically when the user logs on.
