Hello All,

I'm a new user here and could use a little help with a workstation problem.  We've currently started to manage an new network where WOL isn't enabled on all workstations.  So until we can hit all the workstations and get into the bios I'm asking the users to leave their computers on overnight when I'm making changes off hours.  Unfortunately, some of the users have standby/hibernate enabled and I'm unable to get to them in time.  Is there a way to change power settings to all workstations to "always on" via group policy or script (we currently use Kix for their login script).  I did a little digging and found out about powercfg.exe which looks like a good option.  However, it appears that you need to make some sort of registry changes first for users that aren't local admins and I'm a little confused on the best way to make those changes.

If anyone could offer some help on this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mikhail

All users should be local administrators on there machines, so long as you joined them to the SBS domain using the connect computer wizard

Hi Kevin,

Why do you feel that 'All users SHOULD be local administrators" on their machines?? There is absolutely no need for that after all applications have been installed.

Hi Mikhail,

Can you elaborate on the registry edits that would be needed? I know exactly what you mean, and I have hit this issue too. Do you have an URL or something that explains what is needed for that powercfg?

Marina Roos Smallbizserver.Net AdministratorMission accomplished. We have joined the branch office to our SBS 2003 Headquarters and have the same user experience on the branch office as we have on our local  network at the Headquarters. Want to know how? Hello Marina and Kevin,

I agree with Marina, we remove local admin privileges after application installs to keep things safe.  And that was causing us some grief in getting powercfg running on via login script.  It looks like you need to give write permissions to certain areas of the registry that domain users don't have access to.

Thanks for the offer of help Marina, but I managed to find an excellent step by step from MS on how to get what we need done on winXP.  For anyone who might be interested, you can look here:
