My office suffered a backplane failure on Thursday morning and a Dell tech arrived that afternoon. I was told that we had probable data loss as the failure affected two drives in a Raid-5. After many verifies and consistency checks, we could not get the drives to check through error free. The tech's advice? Flatten and restore! I dowloaded the white paper on disaster recovery from the articles section of the website, but I was a bit intimidated by the task. I put in a request for support and promptly recevied a reply from Eriq Neale early the next morning.
The backplane was replaced this morning, and within minutes I was on the phone with Eriq. We began the reinstall/restore from tape and after a few hours the server was back up and running in the exact same state prior to the hardware failure. There was an exchange DB problem, but Eriq had me run eseutil and that issue was corrected.
