Hi
 
How can I connect a non-domain external computer using a domian user and password to my network?
 
They need to have access to a single application database on our server to input and update information, but they work from home.
 
My SBS has a single NIC, a static address with a subdomain of remote.mydomain.co.uk which I have ran through the remote access wizzard and re-run the CIECW and no ISA.

You can either setup a VPN manually or use the CMAK package created by SBS. But they are going to need some credentials in order to get into the VPN, you may just want to create an account for them.

Thanks for your response. When you say create an account for them, do you mean the PC or the user? If the user, I have alreasdy done this, if the PC it won't really be possible as it is their own PC and not company property.

I take it if I create a manual VPN this will allow them access to the files (subject to permissions) on the server if authenticating with a domain user and password?

You can create an account, no computer needed. Is the application database SQL based though? From my experience if it is SQL, your best bet is to have a computer in-office that the user can RWW into and use the database on it. I have attempted to use database programs over a VPN but it is really slow and is prone to errors. By using a computer from within the office, the slowness is still there, but the errors are not.

If you decide to stick with the VPN, even though the computer is not part of the domain, having the vpn access essentially makes it so...

If you have the access info...you can connect to a server no matter where you are.......I connected to a server from a cruise ship.....its the username and permissions that makes the difference!
