I have followed Eriq's article on connecting Macs to SBS networks and have been successful through the step to enable unicast .local resoluiton on the Mac.  I receive the correct response from the Mac.

Then I try to ping the DNS names on my server and can reach nothing.  I can ping the IP address of the server successfully.  I am using a PCI ethernet card instead of the builtin ethernet connection.  I inherited support for this Mac so I am not certain why an additonal card was installed or how to activate the builtin connection if neccessary.

Please help.

Butch -

Are you pinging by NetBIOS name or FQDN? if you can ping servername.domainname.local but cannot pint servername, then you'll need to add the internal domain to the Search Domains field in the network properties of the active ethernet card. If you cannot ping by servername.domainname.local, then something else is going on.

Eriq-

I cannot ping the NetBios name, FQDN, or the NetBios domain name. All are in the the proxy exclusion list. The .local domain has been added to the search domains. I can ping only the IP address.
