Whenever I try to create a rule in OWA, I get the message "This rule can't be saved. Wait a few minutes, and then try again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

There is a KB article that loosely relates to this issue....KB #875269 - "You cannot save a rule with the "Forward it to" attribute set to a fax or Short Message Service address is enclosed in brackets ("[ ]") in Outlook Web Access in Exchange Server 2003."

I don't believe this is relevant in my situation, as all I'm trying to create a rule that forwards email to an external smtp email address (myname@mycompany.com).

Suggestions / advice is most welcome...

Terry

Hi Terry,
If you want all the email forwarded, why not do that in AD users?

Hi Marina

As you suggested, I previously attempted to forward mail to name@xyz.com in AD users (Exchange General tab, Delivery Options, Forward To, Modify)....but I must be missing something simple...... name@xyz.com is currently not an AD object, and so this operation fails. Is there a simple, non-intrusive way to simply create this name@xyz.com object? I don't need to create an entirely new user....just want to forward email to an external person that's not necessarily associated with this SBS domain.

I'm still researching why I can't use rules in OWA...another forum respondent suggested that I remove any anti-spam software on the server...apparently Trend Micro products have produced similar errors in the past. I'm currently running GFI MailEssentials 10, so I'll try to remove it and see what happens.

Hi Terry,

Create a new contact in AD users and give it the external email address. Then forward to that contact.

Hi Marina

Having a little trouble following your suggestion, and I hope you can help.

I created a new user, and assigned it an external email address. I also removed the internal exchange email address that was automatically generated, just to be sure there wasn't any confusion. Next, I applied email forwarding on my account to this newly created user account, and subsequently tested it with a message. The message does get forwarded, but only to the new user's Exchange mailbox (username@domain.local), not to the external email address that I assigned to this new user.

Then I thought this might be due to the way the new user is created in SBS --- so I attempted to create a new user once again, but this time making sure to delete the default email mailbox that SBS/Exchange creates for new users. Once again, I assigned the external email address to this account. Lastly, I tried to apply email forwarding on my account to this new account, but that failed immediately, since the system couldn't find the new user account I created (undoubtedly due to my action of preventing the creation of an Exchange mailbox for this new account).

Thanks for your continued help, Marina!

Regards,
Terry
