I apologize if this has been posted before.  Here is my setup.  Currently I have a cusom built box running SBS2003 Premium which is running great once I replaced the dead RAM (large headache).  I have two nics installed one is connected directly to our cable modem with a dynamic IP address.  The other is connected to our internal network acting as a PDC, DHCP Server, DNS Server, File Server, etc.  I have been having difficulty with SPAM for a long time.  I have used the spam prevention recommended here to no avail.  I installed the free SPAM filter provided by microsoft and spam to my account has increased (it is probably not related).  Before I go out and purchase SPAM filtering software I want to know if it will work with POP3 connectors.  We have our domain hosted through iPowerWeb and they have provided no spam filtering so no luck there.  Since our IP is dymanic I have no choice but to use pop3 connectors (right?) and getting a static ip address is too expensive for where our building is located.  If SPAM programs work with pop3 connectors then does anyone have a recommendation?  We are a non profit and use techsoup.org for our software.  I was looking at MailShell Windows SMTP Gateway.  Anyway, any help would be appreciated.  I would rather stop spam at the server than have to install desktop spam filter on all of our client machines but I will do that if necessary.  Please let me know if you need any more information and thank you again.

Hi Bryce,
you could use dyndns (www.dyndns.org) to link your dynamic ip to a (static) dns name. After that you can use the static dns name to have smtp email delivered. I know this should work, haven't implemented it directly on an SBS machine myself. Maybe someone else has some usefull tips ?

SPAM filters that work for Exchange/SMTP will also work in combination with the (or any other) POP3 connector. The POP3 connector delivers the mail to the SMTP server, where the SPAM filters are sinked. POP3 conn. doesn't put the mail directly in the IS, it offers it to SMTP just as any other mailserver would do whem it accesses an SMTP server directly.
There's one catch though.. All of the SPAM mails will still be downloaded from your ISP by the POP3 connector, before they are filtered, thus still filling up your POP box at the ISP and hindering download performance. So the only profit you will gain is that it doesn't reach the users' Outlook mailboxes.

The SPF (Sender Policy Framework, a new SPAM fighting technique) will probably also not work when using a POP3 connector. Bayesian and/or keyword filter based SPAM filers should be fine.

PS. I personally recommend GFI MailEssentials.. It rocks..
PPS. The free IMF SPAM filter provided by Microsoft does the job perfectly too. Try that first, if it doesn't help, then get a commercial product.

Not completely correct. IMF does not work with POP Mail. If a spam filter works on Exchange level then it will also work on POP mail. If a Spam sits in front of the SMTP engine it does no good for POP mail

I tried using the free spam filter provided by microsoft, it does not block anything.  I will look into GFI Mail Essentails any other suggestions?  Does anyone use GFI Mail Essentails with POP3 connectors?  Thank you so much.

Hi Bryce,

If you are talking about the IMF of Exchange 2003, then indeed, that doesn't work if you are retrieving email with POP3.

I second that! Works like a charm..
Easy to configure, but with the latest spam-fighting techniques and lot's of tweaking/options if you're willing to go deeper into it.

GFI replaces the SBS POP connector.

MailEssentials definitely works with POP3 mailboxes.

GFI can work in tandem with the SBS POP3 connector - I've run it this way for a many months but recently replaced the SBS POP3 connector with GFI's own POP connector (enables me to check more frequently than 15 minutes).  It works well but it isn't as feature rich as other POP3 downloaders out there, but you do get it 'free' with MailEssentials.

Great. Did not know that. I remember that older versions replaced the build in POP connector.
