I have setup Exchange in SBS2003 on our company server. We can receive emails from outside, but are not able to send any outside. We use the POP3 Connector and selected Turn After Authentication because the ISP uses dynamic IP addressing.

Are you you using a service like TZO? I had a customer that had the same situation and their ISP did not accept any traffic at port 25 (outgoing SMTP mail). I needed to adjust the sending port for SMTP traffic to port 2525 according to TZO because SBC (their ISP) blocks port 25.

I am not familiar with TZO. Our ISP does use dynamic DNS addressing; problem is that they don't provide technical support for Exchange so they don't know much about the settings.
When we were running a P2P network in the office, the Outlook clients were configured to use the ISP's SMTP server, when I installed Exchange I changed that to the main ADSL account.
They have suggested I use the IP address for the SMTP server, so I am going to try that and will let you know.

If you are to set a 'smarthost', that means that all mail is forwarded to the ISP's SMTP server that could work too. You can try that to see if that works. What did they tell you about their port 25 policy? It could also happen that the other side (the destination you are sending to) does not accept smtp mail from dynamic IP addresses. That happens almost always. If you set a smarthost you will overcome this problem.

Where do I find smarthost? Is it in the SMTP Connector Properties under General? I have select the option to forward all mail to the smarthost smtp....
ISP help desk wasnt able to give any information about the port - they don't support Exchange, only client Outlook etc

If you selected 'forward all mail to...' when you ran the CEICW you have done enough. I am wondering what ISP you use then I can have a look at their support pages?

Hi Simon,

Well, what would you have to fill in for the SMTP server when using Outlook Express? That is the same as for the Smarthost. This page is having an example:
:: MWEB Home :: Online Help:
http://new.mweb.co.za/help/email_program_express2.html
Thus would the Smarthost be smtp.tiscali.co.za.

Hi Simon,

But is the ADSL provider the same as your email provider? Smarthost will only work if you use the ADSL provider's mailserver.

I just checked if your ISP blocked by RBL's but that was not the case. There must be something blocking outgoing traffic on port 25 or maybe they have some super special SMTP server that does not accept connections from Exchange server or similar. If you remove the Smarthost and use DNS can you try to send me an email message at mariette at smallbizserver.net?

FYI, for everyone.
This problem has been found and resolved. There is a bug documented on the MSFT support site:

Cannot send external mail when your smart host server is different from the ISP server where your e-mail is stored in Windows Small Business Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827601
