Hi I recently had to rebuild an sbs 2003 server. I had backed up all the data including system state using Veritas 9.1.

when trying to restore - had numerous problems with the OS so left the company data on the system and reloaded the SBS system. After the server was up and running - following the veritas manual I restored the individual mailboxes for all the users. This was reported as being successful. OWA is working ok. as is outlook (all are 2003) when not in cached mode.

Unfortunately most of the clients are mobile and need the cached mode,

when cached mode is configured clicking on send/recieve results in the following message

Microsoft Exchange Server reported error (0x80040107) could not open the item. Try again!

well I have no idea - have used eseutil to check the integrity of the database -its ok.

Also have exported the data from one users old ost file to a pst and and then reimported the data in the new profiles cached mode ost file. I can send email - it just doesn't pick new mail up. and you get the error message above.

I have seen one item on the web where someone had the exact same circumstances - he apparently dismounted the exchange databse and repaired it. which solved the problem.

I am reluctant to try a repair (due to lack of experience and the scary warnings etc) but at the moment feel like I have no choice. should I use isinteg or eseutil. isinteg seems to be the choice.

any help much appreciated cheers

Many thanks for the prompt reply pim,  I have been using this document - which lead me to the option of repairing the database. Just that it would be nice to have a definitive MS document which gave a definite fix to the problem.

Unfortunately I have been working my buns off for the last four days trying to get the beast backup and running - with the clients applications etc, at the moment other than sharepoint event 1000 being generated regulary everything except cache mode works - also have noticed that the company web is out of action (he client doesn't use it so at the moment its not a big issue - unless related in some bizzarre way to the cache problem. I don't think the company web is an issue as OWA is working perfectly as far as I am aware.

Not saying I'm stressed but I would happily change religion if someone could prove their God existed and would look kindly on me at this time.

This applies also to Exchange 2003:

An "0X80004005" event is added to the synchronization log when you try to download the offline Address Book in Outlook:

Look also at this one:

E-mail messages and files are not downloaded to Outlook folders during the synchronization process in Outlook 2003:
