Under SBS, Exchange has a physical limit of 16 gig.  Bad luck in nowadays environment where email @ client side looks like a global repository of information.  Some of them are reluctant to move to SPS and like to keep on emailing forever, so we are asked to increase the mailbox size up to 1 gig per user.  Let's imagine we have 16 crazy guys with one gig space and we'll kill Exchange at the speed of light ;-).  When Exchange hangs it's everything but funny.

Under Exchange Enterprise Edition, you can create multiple stores (up to 20), it's making backup/restore more conveniant (faster) and we can group users per department / projects like Executives, Accounting, Sales, Marketing ...

How about Exchange under SBS2003 ? Supported, available, how to do it, consequences ... Any idea or input welcome...

Hi Alex,

Welcome to www.smallbizserver.net. There is no way you can pass the limit of the Exchange version included in SBS 2003. As you mentioned Exchange enterprise offer greater flexibilty but is also a lot more expensive. Sometimes you must tell users that email is not meant for big files. I sometimes use as an example that you don't use an enveloppe to send somebody a pile of bricks :-)

SBS 2003 includes a wonderfull piece of software that allows users to store large amount of files. It is called Sharepoint Services. Collaboration is really made easy of all the users use Instant Messenger with the email address they have on the domain. In your buddies list in Sharepoint you can see who is online and you can discussions about certain issues or files on Sharepoint.

I always set a maximum on the mailboxes or just leave the default settings. It is best practice that users delete/move big attachments to either Sharepoint or their private folders on the server.

Just one thing. There are rumours that SBS 2003 Release 2 will no longer have the 16Gb limit on the stores. If you have SA (Software Assurance) you will get R2 automatically, if you don't have SA you are out of luck. Don't ask me more about R2, I just don't know more and even if I could I would not tell you. What I told you now I found using Google.

We have joined the branch office to our SBS 2003 Headquarters and have the same user experience on the branch office as we have on our local  network at the Headquarters. Want to know how? Hello Mariette,

Thanks for your answer.
As I said not all users are fans of (Sharepoint Portal Services, SPS) also known as WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services).  Digging into Exchange docs (MS Press on Exchange MCSE training), it said that only one store is allowed per server in Exchange Standard (the version of SBS I assume).

Bet let's face it, email is becoming the universal communication system, we have to keep alive ( 5 or 10 years !!) some emails for legal reasons (sent items, received items are also proofs) and I don't have blind confidence in pst files to do this. Therefore this 16 gig limit is really a problem . Anyway, ain't no cheap solution on that.
