Hi,

I have two people with the same names in different organisations that can't send mail to each other.

So joe.blogs@domain1.com can't send to joe.blogs@domain2.com. Both log on to the AD (one of which is sbs 2003) with the same user name - JoeBloggs. Both appear in each others address books. I gues that Outlook (or Exchange) looks up the Joe Blogg and comes across the "Logon"  entry first and resolves that to the main smtp address for that uses and delivers back to them.

Any suggestions (I'm new to Exchange)?

Txs in advance

Try this:

User joe.blogs@domain1.com opens Outlook and creates an email message. Instead of choosing the recipient from the address book type in the 'to' box joe.blogs@domain2.com.

Does that work?

Hi Guy,

Can you turn up the logging on the smtp connector or use the message tracking centre to see what exactly happens when joe1 is trying to send an email to joe2? Where does the message end up? NDR?

Have briefly scanned the logs and nothing is untoward - I'll dig deeper. The mail get delivered to the user that sent it - not as a NDR but as a "genuine" messgage.

It's as though Outlook/Exchange looks up the "FirstName LastName" first, find that entry in the active directory and then delivers to the local recipient rather than the remote. If you put the smtp address in it converst that to FirstName LastName (as it is in the address book) then looks the address up.

This is happening on both of the Exchange Servers (one of which I have no control over and did not set up) so I guess the behaviour is an Exchange/AD problem rather than a misconfiguration issue.

Regards,
Guy

Hi Guy,
Can you check the internetheaders of those messages? Can you also post the original names and domain names please?
Another possibility is to turn of the check names in Outlook. I can't tell you exactly where to find it, but it should be there somewhere. Auto complete maybe?

Hi Guy/Marina,

don't know if it's the solution, but do know how to turn of auto complete:
Follow these steps to turn off Auto-complete in address books:
  1. Select Tools > Options.
  2. Click E-mail Options.
  3. Click Advanced e-mail Options.
  4. Under When sending a message:
    • Deselect Automatic name checking
    • Deselect Suggest names while completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields
    • Click OK.
    • Click OK.
regards,
pim
