I have had to recover a server today which had ground to a halt (Exchange 2003 running on SBS 2003 Standard).
As part of the process I took a copy of 10,125 incoming emails stuck in the
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\queue
folder. Yes I know 10,125 is a lot! The company involved emails their customers a lot and their customers reply a lot too!. They are not Spammers as it's all opt-in email that the customers have asked for.
The incomming emails were stuck because the Information store was at it's maximum size and for no other reason. I have run an Offline Defragment and the priv1.edb is now a sensible size email is coming and going fine.
HOWEVER - I still have these 10,125 emails that need to be delivered to the right desks.
Can I just put them in the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\queue folder again?
Will exchange just find them and deliver them internally?
Just want some advice before I do something stupid.
All comments welcomed

i would add them a few at a time, dont just dump 10,000 emails into the queue. i have done this whilst on the phone with microsoft - but i cant remember if i had to do anything else to get the mail to flow. Run the exchange BPA - first, to see if anything is flagged as wrong. if mail gets stuck in the queue again, try the exchange trouble shooting assistant (whilst the mail is stuck) - also from microsoft.com |

I have tried moving 50 of the emails back to the queue folder and they are just sitting there.
They do not seem to be listed in server manager when I navigate to the queues bit of the snap-in.
Is the contents of the queue folder referenced from somewhere else? Is the problem related to the date/time stamp on the files? They are now 3-4 days old.
I have tried using the exchange troubleshooting assistant and haven't been able to make any sense of it yet. Can you offer any guidance as which would be a useful test to run?

Unfortunately this only gave me (some very interesting) information about a few stuck outgoing messages.
I still have the 50 test emails sitting in the queue folder going nowhere.
I have opened up a few of them in outlook express and they seem to be addressed correctly, exchange just seems to ignore them.
Is there a database or list of emails that exchange is looking for in the queue folder? Do I need to add the 10,125 emails to this list before exchange will see them?
Please don't tell me to go through them by hand forwarding them using OWA! This is all I can think of at the moment!
All help needed!

are they stuck with 'retry' status, or just stuck? are they visible in exchange system manager at all, or just in the queue folder? |

Thanks for your continued help
The emails are not visible in exchange system manager at all, they are just in the queue folder.

I'm on site at the customers for the next few hours. If anyone has the time to give me some ideas that would be great!

Hi Marina, thanks for caring! I decided with my customer to just "let sleeping dogs lie". The email didn't want to go anywhere, so we just deleted it... I hope that nobody else out there has had to make the same choice, but in this instance it didn't affect their business greatly. They just re-ran their marketing email and apologised if some of their customers received it twice. It was a bit embarassing at the time, but in hindsight I have learnt to keep a close eye on my customers Information Store size. Particulalrly the customer in question here - they still regulalrly email their opt-in customers with increasingly large attachments. Sorry there isn't a more useful answer here, all the best, Paul. |
