Need a bit of guidence folks -
Exchange System Server > Servers > Servername > R click > properties > Server name properties > monitoring > default microsoft exchange services = stopped > click details >  6 items displayed, 5 running - one stopped (Microsoft Exchange MTA stacks stopped).
Was poking around this morning trying to deal with a user that was getting messages about mail box size warning when I found this.  Exchange seems to be running ok.  And I don't see any related stuff in the event logs.
First - what is this service.  Looks to do with monitoring something.  And second, considering all looks ok, is it any thing that needs to be started?   There is a service listed that looks suspisously like it may be related to this (same name) that is disabled.  I'm pretty sure that was the default way it setup.  (Had a rough time reloading the OS a couple of months ago and may still not have it all right.)

Robert,

This is nothing to worry about.

The Exchange MTA Stacks service is what exchange uses primarily to route email messages via X400 or any other non-exchange mail server. It is also used to transfer messages between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 5.5 (for backward compatibility).
If you have no requirement for any of the above, then exchange will run fine without it. Although, microsoft recommends that you leave this service running (for monitoring purposes). I suggest you change the service status to automatic and windows will start it if needed.

By default this service is disabled on SBS servers as it is not needed.
