Hi
I am having a strange issue whereby some emails directed to a specific email address are going missing, and also some emails that should go to this person via a distribution group go missing.
When I joined the company they were using the hosting company's pop mail server. I decided we should use the exchange server with SBS2003 and contacted the hosting company to update the MX records. I did however leave the email boxes that had been previously created on the hosting server. After noticing the missing email problem I decided to delete them in case they were causing a problem, that was more than a week ago and emails still go missing.
Everyone else seems to be getting mails fine.
Any ideas what could be happening here?
Thanks
Ed

have you tried using the message tracking center in exchange system manager to try and see where the messages are going? check the users junk mail folder also. |

Ok I did that and was suprised to find my test emails in the list of emails to the problem address. That means that the problem is with our server. I looked at the message history for one of the test emails and got this (note I have changed the email to email@host.com)
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Message Submitted to Advanced Queuing
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Message Submitted to Categorizer
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Message Queued for Local Delivery
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP:Message Delivered Locally to email@host.com
05/03/2008 13:55 SMTP Store Driver:Message Delivered to Store to email@host.com
Does this tell us anything about the problem?
I did notice that in the emails sent from to the info distribution group, the message shows all the individual's email addresses with capitals - e.g. First.Last@host.com - and the problem email with all lower case - e.g. first.last@host.com

I can see the email in OWA. So what does that mean?
EDIT: Very Strange. The email appears in OWA for about 10 seconds and then dissapears entirely - its not in the Junk or the Deleted Items folder.

Hi Ed,
That means that rules are in place somewhere which make it disappear. You also might want to check on the workstations that the Outlook profile is only having the Exchange mailbox.

Saw that suggestion after googling the problem. Its set up right.

Have you any idea where I should look? Someone suggested checking the virus program, so I removed it on the client (AVG) and he still gets problems. I suppose it could be something to do with the exchange scanning that AVG does on the server but then why do other clients get the missing mails fine?

Hi Ed,
If I can, I will reply, but I really hope you can understand that I have other things to do as well, such as work.
Check the Rules setup in Outlook to see if the user has setup any rules.

Hi Ed,
You will need to investigate the user properties, in particular if others have rights on his mailbox, or maybe he has his mailbox shared with others.

thanks all I think this is fixed. It was the AVG antivirus. Even though it was set up and worked. The user had a slightly different version number, which meant that random emails were junked. Ed |
