Why would anyone setting up a SBS use POP3 connectors rather than Exchange?

I have just taken over a company who the previous IT guy has done just that....

You know, sometimes it is just easier if that is the infrastructure that you inherit. Starting afresh I would go for SMTP every time, but some end users try and screw you down on costs and seem to know so little about where their mail comes from it just gets too difficult and / or too expensive to try and unravel it. They are usually small companies trying to do everything on a shoestring / don't want a support contract.

Sad, but true. This is the real world not the ideal world.

A side advantage (for them) is that often the e-mail provider will do the anti-spam (and often anti-virus) for you so what you collect from POP3 is the filtered messages - if they provide anti-spam that it.

Hi Jonathan,

Please elaborate. The SBS Pop3 connector is using Exchange. The only reason why a company isn't using SMTP for email retrieval, is because their domain hoster doesn't support SMTP or they simply don't know how to setup mx records properly.

Sorry for being vague.

I've setup quite alot of SBS's now and have also used SMTP for email retrieval. I have just signed a support contract with a small company with about 14 members of staff and they have an existing SBS2003 Std already installed.

It has software RAID which isn't the way I usually do things and also uses POP3 instead of SMTP for email retrieval. I was just wondering whether there are sometimes some advantages to this or whether it's just a case of they didn't know how to set the MX etc...

Hi Jonathan,

Why don't you ask your customer and why don't you make inquiries to see if their domain hoster supports SMTP?
