Hi all -

Hired a local consultant to do my SBS 2003 Premium server upgrade to new server hardware. They decided this could be best accomplished by using Symantec 12 SBS edition to do a disaster recovery restore. This failed several times, so they decided to buy the Swing Kit, and do the upgrade using the swing method. A number of hours into it, and they aborted it because it was "taking too long", and we didn't have that kind of time remaining before we needed to be back online.

Now I have listings in DNS, Exchange, etc. that reference both servers, the old SBS box, which was put back on the wire, and the new SBS box, which was pulled off the wire. (I am not sure where they left off in the process, but they do plan to attack it again this weekend.)

In the meantime, I created several new users, and they are now associated with the new Exchange server, even though that box doesn't exist at present. Needless to say, they aren't getting any mail.

How to move these users from the non-existent box to the working box? It is grayed out in the properties of the user under Exchange General tab.

Thanks in advance,

Dawn

You might need to us the ntdsutil utility to clean up the AD. Here is an article that describes how to use it.

You also might want to consider looking around for a more experienced SBS consultant. A Swing Kit migration is done 98% off line of your production network. So when you say "didn't have that kind of time remaining before we needed to be back online" ~ this troubles me. You should not have been offline at all during a swing migration. Well. maybe for a 1/2 hour while the DC were synchronizing.

Thank you, Stan, for the link. I will review.

Our Exchange server was offline during the swing, and we queued our mail at a third party vendor.

I know of the swing process, but have never done it myself, so don't have the details. I don't know where they left off, for example, or how closely they followed the documentation. The engineer advised they were "almost done" when the plug was pulled. We had problems with the two SBS machines on the wire, so I physically removed the second server from the wire, and they now have it to test the disaster recovery method. We are hanging in there because I do think it is important to know that the disaster recovery piece will work should we ever need it.

This failed upgrade has caused a host of problems, including GP issues, lost drive mappings, long login times, etc. The lack of working e-mail for the two new users seemed to be the most urgent issue at this point.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right directiion.
