Hi,

We use the POP3 connector(SBS 2003) to download email hosted by Verio.
The major disadvantage to this method is that emails are downloaded in intervals of 15(minimum) minutes.

Can someone please explain how to eliminate the fifteen minute delay?

We have a fixed IP address. However there is no DNS attached to this IP.
Can NO-IP or other dynamic DNS service work in this case? Is it at all necesary to have a domain name attached to our local IP?
I've read some web pages on receiving email via SMTP mail but i don't fully understand them.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi Jim,

No, the 15 minutes is hard coded and although you could change it, it isn't supported and can cause a lot of problems. Even without a static public IP you can switch to use SMTP to retrieve email, by using one of those dynamic DNS services. What do you mean with 'no DNS attached to this IP'? Do you have a registered domain name?

Yes, we do have a registered domain name. As I said before, our website and mail is hosted by Verio.
Locally, we have a fixed IP but it has no domain name associated with it.
Can SMTP mail retrieval work with the above setup?
What DNS parameters would I have to modify  on the Verio Control Panel? What should my MX record be?
Can you please guide me by way of link(s) or a tutorial?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Roman, but the registry hack to decrease the polling internal is not supported and could lead to lost of emails.
I'd prefer to try out SMTP mail retrieval. I just need a guide/tutorial for the setup I mention above. Note, I'm using Windows SBS 2003.

Hi Jim,

Ask your hoster if they do support SMTP. If yes, then setup the mx record and point it to your public IP. Forward port 25 from the router to the server and run the CEICW to enable the Exchange and fill in your public registered domain name. If you can telnet to your public IP on port 25 from outside your network, mail should be good.
