Hi All,

Got a strange problem on an SBS03 server.  I rebooted it over the weekend and two of the 6 users got a bunch of Undeliverable Email bounces from emails they have sent in the last 3 weeks...which are a bit annoying..

I am not so worried about why they didn't get there as that is a problem in itself but really need to suss out why the undeliverable notices didn't get returned to the user until the server was rebooted..

Any ideas?

It did happen once before when I rebooted the server but I didn't think much of it, but this time I am starting to wonder. It doesn't happen every time i reboot the server.  (sounds like a reboot all the time...but I don't! )

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly apprecaited.  Let me know if you need any more info..I wasn't sure what would be useful..

Cheers,

Graham.

Graham I have a site that went live approximately three months ago (SBS R2). We rebooted the Server as part of some scheduled updates etc about four weeks ago and a bunch of emails were delivered that were sent over the preceeding weeks. There were no queues prior to the reboot, diagnostic logging is turned right up (as I do with all new Servers initially) and there are no events logged and no delay or ndr's for these messages.

The site is functioning each and every day and this is by no means my first SBS install. No third party SPAM is in place.

We had a cabling issue which dropped the external nic connection on Friday at this site and as a result the OWA and some other services stopped functioning. I ran the Internet wizard last night rather than reboot the Server to correct and again about a hundred emails not previously delayed, NDR, failed or in a queue were sent from the preceeding few weeks.

I am at a complete loss as to where these messages have come from as the users mailboxes/Outlook clients indicate they have been sent and there are no events, queues etc with these messages. The DNS and all other functions appear to be working flawlessly.

Strangely enough I had one other client who opted to rebooting their own Server (SBS Premium R1) once a week as they claim they have had a similar issue on a smaller scale from time to time but again at that site there is no smoking gun.

I would be really keen to hear if anyone has any suggestions or has experience similar issues.

I did some researching and seems that this may be related to a known issue that has existed for some time. It seems it may be related to recipient grelyisting and retry periods from info I have read on the web.

Either way apparently there is now a bug fix...I will install and test over the next week.

Nice find, I will run it tonight as well and see how it goes.

Cheers,

Graham.

Hi Graham,

I installed this at my own site and have since installed it at another and so far I have not had any negative ramifications and to date it appears to have solved the problem. How did you go?

Hey Dale,

Seems good for me too, not getting any NDR's on reboot, although not sure we have got any at all so....maybe need to wait a bit longer...but seems good to me

Graham.
