I tried doing the install of ISA 2004 from the SP1 CD last Friday afternoon.  Followed the instructions on installing SP1 from this website.  Installation went fine, but found I was "locked out" from the internet from the server and workstations.  (I need to learn NEVER to install software or do upgrades on a Friday afternoon.)  In the interest of getting us back on-line, I uninstalled ISA 2004, rebooted and got us back on-line.

I'm an ISA-newbie - don't know hardly anything about it.  Did some reading in a SBS book and saw that I (probably) needed to go into some sort of management console to "get things working" after I did the install.

I searched this website and did a cursory search of microsoft.com and didn't find anything about this.

Am I missing something?  Is it as simple as the SP1 instllation instructions?  Or is there more to it?

Hi Mike,

Assuming you have run the connect to internet wizard AGAIN after installing SP.

I have had similar issues with ISA in the past when I installed SBS2003 Prem for the first time (forget Friday afternoons I have to go through the night) when the brown stuff hit the fan.

I don't know if the following is a definitive answer but it worked for me ( I check it each time I run the CEICW

I seem to recall a DNS issue with the automatic settings on the external NIC IP settings  e.g. your router address might be 192.168.1.2 and your external NIC might 192.168.1.1 BUT sometimes the CEICW sets the EXTERNAL NIC DNS as the internal Servers IP e.g. 10.0.0.2.

So therefore go into the extenal NIC settings and go into IP properties where you no doubt will find something like "obtain address automatically" in both parts IP,Subnet Mask and DNS at the bottom it's this bottom tab you need to enter a manual DNS IP address (I used the routers IP Address)

So my rule of thumb is internal NIC then internal DNS (Server) and on external NIC then DNS point to external router IP

Hope this helps
Matt

I remember that CEICW came up automatically during the installation process.  Didn't think about running it again.

Per the instructions I found on this website for setting up 2 NIC's (had been running 1 NIC until about 3-4 weeks ago):  The routers IP is 192.168.1.1, the external NIC has all but TCP/IP running, and it is set to get all info automatically.  The internal NIC has Client for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP checked.  The TCP/IP properties are:  IP - 192.168.16.2 (reserved in DHCP, too), submet mask of 255.255.255.0, default gateway left blank, preferred DNS server set to the server (192.168.16.2) and the alternate to the ISP's primary DNS server.

Somehow, internet access stopped working.  Any ideas/comments?

Set the external nic to a static ip first. I recall my ISA 2004 complaining about a dynamic ip.

You never set an isp dns number in a nic on your SBS. You set both the internal nic and the external nic dns to point to your internal nic ip for dns. ISP dns numbers are entered as forwarders using the connect to internet wizard or manually in DNS. Use the wizard though.

Your external nic should be 192.168.0.2, sn 255.255.255.0, gw 192.168.0.1, dns 192.168.16.2 This assumes that your router ip is 192.168.0.1

Your internal nic and your external nics have to be on different networks. A typical SBS has it's network and 192.168.16.x. So your typical SBS has an internal ip of 192.168.16.2. The external nic ip is what is appropriate for your router.

We start troubleshooting with an ipconfig/all from the command prompt if you do not follow or understand what I am saying. The article should be fairly clear though.

Followed your advice and found I was wrong.  Now, however, I still can't access the router or the internet from any client.  I'll close this thread and start a new topic in Networking to get this resolved.
