I was performing a Windows Update on my SBS 2k3 Premium server and saw ISA Service Pack 3.
Has anybody installed this yet, and are there any known issues?

Hi Tyler,
are you absolutely sure about this?
There is no ISA2K4 SP3 (and afaik it will never be released).
Best regards,
Mirko

There appears to be. I've just been informed it's available for download by our SBS2003 Premium.
Size: 11.2 MB ISA Server 2004 Service Pack 3 provides increased security, new troubleshooting options and tools available directly from the ISA Server Management console, new diagnostic logging functionality, and enhanced log viewer and log filtering options for ISA Server 2004 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. In addition, this service pack adds support for publishing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with ISA Server 2004. More information for this update can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77501

Hi Neil,
well, that is interesting.
I did a quick search for any news re. SP3 on ISA2K4 last night before posting but I could not find any hints.
My information at that time was that SP3 would never be released because of the ISA2K6 release...
Best Regards,
Mirko

| Ok... now that we've established that I'm not imagining things... has anybody tried installing the SP yet? |

It's now available in Windows Update. Any other successful installs?

Beware... if you are installing remotely, the update will cutoff your link and the server will sit with a "Restart Now" dialog until someone physically logs on to the server and clicks the damn button. However, I'm not sure if the server will auto-restart overnight. Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

In my recent & painful experience, it's not a good idea at all to run this update remotely!
I ran the ISA2004 SP3 on our SBS2003 SP1 last night (RDPd on the SBS server), & after that, the firewall service would not start again.
Event Viewer showing event ID 11004, details being "not able to read the VPN configuration, cannot locate system handle".
Back in front of the SBS server, I tried various fixes gathered from the ISABlog: delete cache, try re-installing SP3 from a command prompt in repair mode, re-register wspadmin.dll. None of this solved the problem. I went through the VPN configuration, no issues. I also ran a chkdsk on the C:\ drive, no issues there either. .....and still, the Firewall service would not start.
In the end, the thing that cured it was a complete uninstall of ISA2004, re-install from CD, install ISA2004 SP2, & restore the ISA configuration from backup.
So, after many reboots and wasting quite a few hours, I'm back with ISA2004 SP2...but at least the network is up & running.
Can anyone suggest either a more successful way to apply ISA SP3 (!!), or where I should look for information as to what caused its install to fail?
Thanks, Marc

To my surprise I find its already installed and I didnt even notice. I let Windows Update take care of it.

How did you go about restoring ISA config from backup? We do a nightly backup of the system - will the rules be in there, or do you manually create backups?
I am interested as I want to make sure I don't fry the rules again like I did a few weeks ago!
thanks,
Kris

Kris, I am almost certain that your nightly backup routine will not include backing up of the ISA config. It's very easy to backup the ISA (and restore it too ;o)) go into ISA Management, highlight your servername, in the taskpad on the right-hand side you've got a shortcut to backup the ISA config'. or right-click your servername, backup option Cheers, Marc |
