Hi,

SBS2003 Premium, ISA 2004

I have a firewall client on the network who cannot complete a connection to an external FTP server.

Monitoring the FTP server I can see that the client connects (zftpserver) but things stop there, no welcome message etc. After a while the connection is dropped and the ISA server will report the folowing. (this happenss with other FTP servers as well)

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

I know which rule it stops at, but it doesn't seem to be the rule that is causing the issue,

The read only check box has been unchecked for all rules having FTP configuration.

I would hazzard a guess that the secondary connection is failing.

Hi thanks for the response.

Yes the fwc is set to use the proxy

not sure about the ftp options.

I have tried passive and active options in the FTP program as well as using and not using the proxy server.

From the server I can connect fine to any FTP site, just seems to be a problem connecting from the client.ISA  monitoring reports that the connection was closed due to the FTP server not responding in a timely fashion. I have tried a couple of FTP clients as well as from the command prompt using ftp commands all result in the same response. A connection is registered at the ftp server, it then does nothing, no welcome message sent to the client and shortly afterwards the ISA server closes the connection.
very frustrating!

Hi Paul

We had the same problem. Do you have SBS 2003 SP2 installed? Check out http://www.smallbizserver.net/Forums/tabid/53/forumid/11/tpage/1/view/topic/postid/73061/Default.aspx#73487
