Hello.

We have SBS2000, SP4, ISA2000, No exchange, two nics.

Were having a problem trying to get Symantec Corporate AntiVirus 10.1 to see some workstations using client remote install from the server.  The Symantec error indicates that we need to be able to type \\server\Admin$ from a start\run command for the workstation we want to see.  If you can't then Symantec cannot install clients remotely.

There are some things we did recently to the network that could be causing these problems, but i don't know what i should do about it.

Changed from one nic and ip addresses of 10.0.0.x to two nics and internal ip addresses of 192.168.16.x
Replaced some computers with new ones and kept the same computer names.

All 13 workstations were and still are part of the domain.

The network is working fine for all workstations except for this Symantec problem.

How do i get all workstations to be seen from the server using \\wsname\Admin$ ?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Having changed your network config the first thing is to ensure the correct bindings for services to the server NICs. The output of 'IPConfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt' from both the server and one effected workstation may be handy too.

Hello Mick.

Here is the server ipconfig /all.  I'll have to get the workstation one the next time i go there.

Some things i forgot to mention:

All workstations are XP Pro, SP2.
From the server, i can ping some workstations by ip address but not by name.  Some workstations can be pinged by ip address and by name.  Some cannot be pinged at all.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

When are you going to get them SBS 2003?
Ipconfig of the server is good. Please check the binding order in network connections though, and make sure the internal nic is on top. Also check that the internal nic has File and printersharing enabled. We will have to see the workstation's ipconfig/all to give other suggestions.

Hello.

Below is the results of an ipconfig /all for two workstations. Roz could be pinged by ipaddress and -a ipaddress but not by name. Maureen could not be pinged at all.
All pings were done from the server.
I checked the server order of nics and the internal nic is first with File and Printer Sharing enabled.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

The initial ping to roz picks up the wrong IP address. This is probably a stale entry in DNS on SBS. SBS Console, Advanced Management, Computer Management, Services and apps, DNS, server, forward lookup zone, check for invalid entries.

The IP for maureen is correct though, first suspect is some kind of firewall on the PC.

Hello Mick.

There is a mixture of DNS Forward Lookup Zones. Some computers still have the old 10.0.0x address and some have the 192.168.16.x addresses.

What do i do? Simply change them in the DNS Forward Lookup Zones?

As far as i know, none of the workstations have a firewall.

Thanks,
Tony

Any workstation having a registered IP from the old subnet should have the record deleted. We will then need to look at why they are not updating their records.

Unless you do a degree of 'customisation' you should only have one 'forward lookup zone', not a mix.

So, i should delete any entry in the DNS Forward Lookup Zones with an ip address of 10.0.0.x?

Should i do this while they are using the system? How does it get put back with the correct ip scheme?

Thanks,
Tony

Yes, your internal subnet is 192.168.16.x, any A records pointing to 10.whatever are invalid. You can just delete them and the theory is that the PCs will register themselves again, there may be a problem here because they should have changed their current registration HOWEVER having bad records is _at least_ as bad as having no records.

Doesn't happen a lot but frequently enough to mention: If you delete the bad records and then restart the effected PCs you _may_ find they register correctly and you never experience the problem again.

Hello Mick.

OK. All workstations are now on the 192.168.16.x ip addresses according to DNS Forward Lookup Zones.

However, we still have the same problem of not being able to do \\machinename\Admin$(from the server) on some computers as well as not being able to ping by name/ipaddress. The inability to do these functions seems to be on the same machines.

On some computers, if i ping using the -a and ip address it returns the fully qualified domain name and on others it returns a ping but not the FQDN and still on others it just does not ping.

Any help that you can provide to resolve these issues would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server and a workstation. Also run ipconfig/flushdns and ipconfig/registerdns on the workstations. Check if File and Printersharing is enabled on the nics of the workstations, and also if it is checked in the tab exceptions of the Windows XP firewall.

Hello Marina.

Below is the ipconfig /all for the server and one workstation. I also confirmed that all workstations had their nic checked with File and Printer Sharing and that the File and Printer Sharing was checked on the Exceptions tab in the Windows Firewall. I then ran ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /registerdns on all workstations. No errors or exceptions were indicated on any of the workstations during any of the tasks that i completed.

Thanks for any help that you can provide to resolve this issue.
