Hello All:

I have a company that is changing their name.  CompanyPartners.com will now become XYZArchitects.com.
They have single SBS 2000 / Exchange 2000 server.
Email is currently going to the ISP (they do some half decent spam blocking) then downloaded from them by exchange. This process doesn't have to be duplicated with the new domain - it's just how the server was setup when inherited.

They would like to maintain their existing ISP setup so that they can check messages to the old domain name online as necessary until everyone gets used to the new company name.

They would like to keep all of their existing email messages and public folder content.

What is the best scenario for migrating to the new name?
Isn't there a global server domain change needed or can this be ignored internally and just make necessary Exchange changes?
What are the necessary Exchange changes?

Of course, we'd like to make the process as smooth as possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Joel -

Just worry about the changes in Exchange and ignore the rest. If you think you want to change the internal domain name or the server name because of this, you're looking at a complete rebuild of the server, not just a few settings to change a name. It's a much bigger deal than that.

All you really need to do is change the Default Recipient Policies in Exchange to reflect the new e-mail domain name, and possibly modify the e-mail addresses on some accounts in the domain (those that may not be configured to get updates from changes in the Default Recipient Policies, that is). No changes need to be made to their Outlook configuration (except changing any signature files they may have to reflect the new addresses) or to their AD objects.

HTH...

Hey Eriq:

Thanks for the reply. That sounds like what I thought might be the best bet.

Any potential caveats or should the process be as straightforward as it sounds?

Sorry for teh delayed response. Yes, it's as straightforward as it sounds. hopefully you've figured that out already by now, though. :)

Hello Eriq:

We're just getting to do this this weekend.

Right now this box is pulling down email via POP3.
We want to use SMTP with the new domain.
When I re-run the ICW I should just switch it to SMTP and then check "Use domain name system (DNS) for mail delivery?
Any adjustments to ISA necessary?

Thanks again.

Eriq / All:

The switchover went smoothly. There were some minor hassles getting the old email (from the old domain) forwarded by the ISP but that wasn't a big deal.  The only real problem was that inbound email never seemed to appear but that was a router issue....I had switched everything to SMTP  BUT my router didn't have port 25 open. Once I remembered that everything went smoothly.

Thanks again.
