When I connect a lan cable I can join the PC to the network and everything seems to work correct/as expected. When I try to connect to the the sbs network ( 2 nics ) I get an IP-adress from the server. But connecting to it is impossible? pinging the ip works. rdp doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

setup is a speedtouch 585i connected to a belkin gigabit switch. and both nics of the sbs servers are also connected to this switch. when connecting the vista pc with a lan cable on the speedtouch everything works.

config:
192.168.1.254   Speedtouch 585i
192.168.1.1      External nic sbs server
192.168.3.254   Internal nic sbs server (pc gets an ip-adres in this range)

When manually configuring the wifi nic in the pc with an ip in the 192.168.1.* range with def gateway and dns 192.168.1.254 I can use the internet connection.

Both Nics of the server are connected to the switch? That should not be.....it should be speedtouch-->external SBS NIC then Internal SBS NIC to Switch and the rest of the network...So the Switch should only handle the 192.168.3.X range.... So your pc should have an IP with this range and the DNS should be the 192.168.3.254 addy

Take a look here for a diagram: http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=266&articleType=ArticleView&articleId=76
Ignore the ISA parts if you dont have that installed

Yes, Thank you.

I know how I should set it up but as my server isn't online al the time I choose for this config so I could also access the internet when the server is off.

It works fine this way.

If that is the case....ditch the dual nics and let the router be the gateway address.....your issues are coming from the dual nics not working like they should.

Hi Rene,

There should never be a reason for the servernics to be connected to the switch. That will never work. I don't understand the 'my server isn't online all the time'. Where is the WAP located in the network?

Hi Marina,

The wap is in the speedtouch 585i ADSL router. As I'm experimenting with my SBS server there are times I can't use it and need internet access. I'm not so lucky to have the money for several different servers. It's working fine in this config. The server is DHCP Server and leases ip adresses to al the workstations on the network. The server is connected with both network card on the switch and the speedtouch is also connected to the switch with a cable.

So when the server is offline i'm manually configuring the workstations with a static ip in the 192.168.1.x range with gateway and dns 192.168.1.254 (which is the lan ip-adres of the speedtouch).

Everything works fine and the workstation that accesses the network through wifi is working fine (when booted into xp home) it's assigned an ip from the sbs server and is able to access the internet through the sbs server. When I installed Vista Ultimate on the pc I got an ip from the sbs server but couldn't access anything in the network nor could I access the internet. When connecting this vista workstation with a lan-cable to the speedtouch I was able to get it into the sbs network. But when disconnecting the lan and activating the wifi connection... I got the ip but again couldn't access anything on the network. So there must be somthing here I'm missing??

I know it's not a standard config but it works perfectly. (except the vista wifi part)

Hope this extra info helps in finding a solution.

Hi Rene,

The only solution is to buy a hub or a switch where you connect the server's internal nic to, and workstations. That way you can also keep DHCP server running on the router, and have your machine connecting to the SBS network with a wire, and to the router wireless when the server is down.

But why o why is everything working fine when i boot the pc into xp pro and not funtioning when booting into vista?
Got the same problem with my laptop now... aaarrggh
Boot into windows XP everything works.
Boot into vista can manuallly connect to the shares on the server but very slow and can't access internet!

Why does everything work perfectly on xp on 2 machines and NOT when booting the same machines into vista?

Hey there,

Well I seem to have the same kind of problem. Is this the first anoying vista experience.

I have 1 SBS2003 Server R1 (yes only one NIC - Firewall is enabled in router)
3 client :
  1 = XP;
  2 = Vista Business;
  3 = Laptop Vista Business.
All connected trough a speedtouch 780i wireless router.

nr 1 and 2 connect to the domain via cable. No problems so far.

The laptop however needs to connect via wireless. No go!!!!
If I plug in the cable there's no problem, I can go on-lin, join the domain, etc.
If I try this wireless it just doesnot want to connect to the server. Internet however is working fine. DHCP is on the SBS, so must be some kind of communication.

Anybody any idea??????

JFYI

I am also noticing some strange problems with vista vs. wireless ... .
I've setup a test environment with two WAP's (different brands).
All windows Xp machines can connect to the sbs server, have internet, ... .
The Vista (enterprise ed.) laptop however can connect from time to time ... .
Sometimes it doesn't see a WLAN network at all ... then I have to switch the WLAN button on the laptop on and off for several times untill it finally sees the two AP's ... .
Because it can't see none of the AP's (and also another neighbour's network) I assume it are the drivers.
Although I updated the drivers, the problem stays.
At other places the laptop has no problem connecting to WLAN's at all.

That's the only annoying part of Vista, all other things work very good! CRM is MUCH faster (and I don't the load .aspx tool anymore), office 2007 is also much faster.
Only at home my pc is getting slower and slower, guess I'll have to buy a new one ....

Thomas,

That must be a driver issue. I had the same when I fist installed my HP notebook. There is Intel 2200BG inside and Intel is providing updates for this one.

ps.

I also notised when running on battery the wireless network jumps on and off. I lowered the sending power from the adapter to medium. Problem solved.
So maybe plug in the power cable??

Arno,

That is indeed the solution. I noticed before that, when I put in the AC adaptor, the laptops sees the wireless AP's, on batteries it doesn't :)
That is one of the best bugs ever :p

Hello all.

It's unbelivible, but after 7 days of reachers I've found the problem.

Believe me or not. It's NOT Windows Vista or SBS.

This afternoon I took my trusty old Linksys WAP11 out of the box and connected it to my network.
I disabled the wireless connection from my Speedtouch 780i and connected to my WAP11.

Gess What.....................It's running.......................

So those nice SPEEDTOUCH modems don't work with Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Took me 1 complete week to figure that out.

So next week I'll be contacting my provider for another solution ( another router that is ). Dumb F....

I hope I can help anybody with this dicovery. Running Vista??? Don't use a Speedtouch modem......

Greetings,

Arno
