I have a Vista laptop which I want to move from one SBS 2003 server to another SBS 2003 server. I want to make sure that the user profile is kept if at all possible.

In the Workstatiosn Forum I found refernece to doing this using XP computers:

Better than using the File Transfer wizard is to do the following.

14.      Migrate User settings by doing the following on each computer:
a)      On the client computer, create a new local user account using the Local Users and Groups MMC snap-in (accessible via the Computer Management snap-in) and add the account to the local Administrators group (you can make the local group memberships more appropriate after joining the domain.
b)      Log on with the new local user account.
c)      Open the System tool in Control Panel, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings in the User Profiles section.
d)      Select the domain account you want to migrate, click Copy To, and in the Copy To Profile box, type the path to a suitable folder on the hard drive ( most likely a subfolder of the C:\Documents and Settings folder).
e)      Click Change, click Locations, select the local computer in the Locations dialog box, and then click OK. This returns you to the Select User or Group dialog box.
f)      Type the name of the local user account you created and then click ok. Click ok again twice to finish copying the profile.
g)      Open the Local Users and Groups snap-in, double click the local user account you created, click the Profile tab, and then type the location of the folder to which you copied the profile in the Profile Path box, Click ok when you’re finished.
h)      Open the System tool in the Control Panel, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change (on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers). On Windows 2000 Computers, click the Network Identification tab and then click Properties.
i)      Select Workgroup, type a workgroup name (Workgroup is always popular), and then click ok. Reboot the computer when prompted, log on using the newly minted local user account, and then use the Network Configuration Wizard to join the domain and migrate the new local user account, which now stores the settings of the domain account you want to migrate.
Shane
P.S. This gives you more of your settings than the Transfer File Wizard

This was submitted by Shane Edde way back in 2005, so I assume that things have moved on a bit since then. However if they have I hvent found anything like this forVista so am wondering how it works now.

In Vista I can only see my logged in profile....

Am I making mountains out of molehills here? Is there another methodology I need to use?

Regards
Jeff

Jeff, have you tried this method. Seems pretty straight forward (done this before) but not with Vista yet. Do you have a umber of machines to do or just one or two?

I know this is an old thread, but I had to the same thing recently for 10 Vista Business workstations. Basically the above didn't work.

When I tried to login with the new local account that was using the old domain profile, I consistently received an error message stating that it would use a temporary profile instead (happened on all the workstations).

I had to do it all manually - i.e copy the C:\Users\domain_account to a temp location then remove the workstation from the domain, reboot, rejoin new domain and then copy over the profile. Note though that i didn't just copy the entire profile, I did seleted items like Documents, Pictures, Favourites etc... mind numbingly boring and slow.

If anyone knows of a better way to do this for Vista, would be interesting to know what it is!

We have joined the branch office to our SBS 2003 Headquarters and have the same user experience on the branch office as we have on our local  network at the Headquarters. Want to know how? Hi Marina,

Yes this update was installed on all the Vista workstations.

I don't know why this procedure didn't work, as logically it should have done - all the same options are available in Vista as in XP... I'd be interested to hear of anyone else that has managed to get this process to work.

Anyway, the workstations are all now happily using the new domain and I've learnt some hard lessons about installling SBS...! Hopefully I shouldn't have to go through it again anytime soon.
