Hi,

I think I may have made a stupid mistake in the process of introducing a Vista client. Here's the scenario:

1. SBS 2003 SP2 Premium (initially no ISA install)
2. Set-up users with roaming profiles on server rather than leaving them local (which I now realise I probably should have done)
3. Intrdoduce Vista Laptop to domain using wizard after installing ISA client

These three steps were originally taken, the results were:

1. Lost internet connectivity at client after introducing to domain (was able to connect prior to joining domain by obtaining a DHCP lease though)
2. Log-in very slow (up to 10 minutes)
3. Message that there is a problem with the roaming profile problem so the client will use local profile only

After a number of re-boots of the client, I installed ISA 2004 on server and left in its default state, thinking that having the ISA client but no server may have been getting in the way. At this point, I still had no internet connection, but was able to open \\mycompany interanet site from the client using either wired or wireless connection.

So I took it upon myself to.......

1. Remove client from domain and returned to workgroup
2. Use Vista "system restore" to restore settings to pre-domain settings

And the results were....

1. Still no internet connectivity (Using server IP as Primary DNS)
2. Cannot open the connectcomputer wizard from the client and so cannot connect to server "at-all"
3. CAN ping server IP address (192.168.100.1)
4. CAN ping server name (XYZ.local)
5. The contents of my "Documents" folder in Vista is now resident in my profile folder on the server instead of on my local PC
6. ISA is running in default mode on the server
7. I have not re-installed ISA client on Vista client
8. Can access internet with client using direct internet connection (bypassing SBS Server)

So......

1. How do I rejoin the domain with this client?
2. How do I ensure that the profile information presently on server is transferred back to the client? (I have taken a copy as back-up and located on another logical drive just-in-case)
3. How do I re-establish internet connectivity for the client?
4. What casued the huge log-on times after initially joining the domain?

Some of the error messages in event viewer on the client are:

A) The IP address lease 10.0.0.15 for the Network Card with network address 0013E8787471 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.100.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

B) EVENT 6006 Winlogon: The winlogon notification subscriber took 301 second(s) to handle the notification event (CreateSession).

C) EVENT 1129, GroupPolicy: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has succesfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator.

D) EVENT 6005, Winlogon: The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon).

E) EVENT 1521, User Profile Service Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you log off. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - 指定されたネットワーク名は利用できません。 (rough translation: Cannot use network name?)

And finally if I may...

1. How do I configure ISA so that non domain PC's (visitors) can obtain an IP address from the DHCP server and access internet without being domain PC's?

This is a long-winded overview but I hope it is enough information for someone to point me in the right direction.

I enjoy a challenge but this is getting beyond my knowledge and the many books that I have (Unleashed, Using SBS 2003, Pro SBS 2003 etc).

Thanks for any help available.

did you install the firewall client on the vista machine before installing ISA?

what state is the server in now?

what, if any, problems do you have on other clients?

i would imagine that the huge logon time was due to the client downloading your roaming profile.

firewall client was installed prior to installing ISA, and then manually connected to the server

The server seems "fine":

1. roaming setting has been removed from the profile (in the hope that this will force SBS server to place the personal files back onto the client?)
2. No other changes have been made, ISA is still running in default (as-installed) mode
3. It is able to access the internet
4. \\mycompany is visible from the server

No other clients have been introduced as they are all running Vista. Am working with a single machine until we get this right.

ok well there is no point installing the firewall clientl without ISA server being installed, because the firewall client is a component of ISA.

So at the moment the docs and things are on the server, and you wanted them to revert back to the pc when you removed the roaming profile setting?

lets forget the profile for a moment,

ive read a few posts in the vista forum that have suggested removing IPv6 from vista clients, so i would guess that is somthing to start with.

Is the pc currently a member of the domain?

Hi Robert,

That is correct, all documents are on server and I want to get them back on the client, maintaining the profile as local rather than roaming.

The client is presently off the domain sitting in "Workgroup". Tried to re-join the domain but could not open \\myserver\connectcomputer. I will try to disable IPv6 and see how that goes.

If necessary I am not against rebuilding the Vista client and in fact have been considering doing so in order to clean up the hard drives and remove a lot of unnecessary software bundled when new.

Hi Robert,

Update:

1. uninstalled ISA server and re-configured CEICW
2. Access to server and internet from client restored OK (client is presently sitting on the side in a workgroup. Using domain log-on to access resources)
3. removing IPv6 was not necessary to achieve the result to this point

I am still planning on re-building the Vista machine prior to re-joining domain - good opportunity to clean up that PC.

I am guessing at this point that ISA was preventing access to the server and internet.

Having been through this part of the set-up and done some reading, ISA looks and sounds like a great package but a little more study is in order before attacking the beast again!

Thanks for your help.

if you really want to use ISA and the isa client, you might look on the microsoft.com site for the new client software which supports vista as i dont beleive the one that ships with sbs does.
