Hi,

Has anyone had any experience with using online backups as part of their backup strategy? I am considering using iBackup - http://www.ibackup.com and just wondered whether anyone had tried anyone else?

Thanks!

have briefly thought about it .... but discounted it quickly.....

not enough upload bandwidth
backup window is not big enough
most online software is not capable of doing an exchange online backup
restores are going to be very slow and complicated

there were more things but these were the biggies

Thanks Des.

I am really looking to just back up mission critical stuff such as a SQL DB <100MB. iBackup does now offer Exchange server backup but I agree that unless you have a fat pipe it is not viable.

Try : http://remotedatabackups.com
The only require a onetime base backup and then the daily backup is just the delta data.
Because you are just backing up the delta data after the initial base its not limited by bandwith.
Delta data on 10GB usually takes about the same time as a tape backup.
I use it for customer with up to 30GB of data to back up.
Works great and the encryption is also very good.

Do you mean the Exchange backup and restore or the time involved to do a restore?

basically all of them apart from the upload bandwidth which is what the deltas address.

The amount it time to transfer the data and restore has the implications on open files, uptodate files for the backups. While restore time determines how long your server will be offline in a recovery situation.

the requirement for an agent for certain software is essential for exchange/sql etc and VSS as well

the restores are what I see as the most problematic area of an online backup system.

This is why I have discounted them up till now except for "normal" document types.

Online Backups are pratical for small amounts of critical data i.e. under 10GB.

The best I have found was www.databarracks.com

They do a 30 day trial so you can see if it works for you. I recommend having a look at the website it has all the technical info.

If I was going to use an online back solution I would backup to a usb hard drive as well for quick restore other than disaster recovery.

Out of interest SonicWALL are due to release a product which  attaches onto the network and backs up data on the servers/workstations in real time then uploads the data to secure online storage storage. The higher model will backup SQL and Exchange.
For more info have a look at: http://www.sonicwall.com/products/cdp.html
