We are having issues with a NT backup on a windows sbs 2003 server. It ran fine for a good few months but recently it has started to fail. It backs up to There are two errors in the log

This error occures every day so its not an issue with an individual tape. The tape is being replaced as it should be

Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Invalid command.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.

and

Error: ESN\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.

Event viewer gives no more information than the job log

SBS 2003 SP1 or just Windows 2003 SP1?

We have the same problem with our server. We had it working really well for a couple of months, then one day it just stopped working.

After mucking around with the good people at Microsoft for what seemed to be weeks, we ended up getting a 3rd party software to fix the problem and have not had a problem since. The software we now use is called BackupAssist (www.backupassist.com) and it backs up our exchange server and our SQL server every night. The only reason I know that it is installed is because it sends me an email to tell me the job was successful!

They have a trial software on their website, so I would you give it a try.
