SMB's depends on backups, way more then Enterprises, why? Simple:

Budget! If something the only thing they got is their backup, if they have 1 server, the whole smb is down thus everybody can't work like it should. The cost for a downtime per SMB is much higher. In comparison with Enterprises, if 1 server goes down, they have at least one more or they have a Tech team standing by in the company?

Now, everybody is taking backup, that's a GOOD thing. External backups are cheap and fast, easy to deploy.
Easy to deploy... Easy to compromise: Connect the usb disk via USB, fire up ntbackup, voilà you got the companies data.

I encrypt the data disks, so if the disk is taken out by somebody, they just can't reach the data partition and files. I rather have the data destroyed then somebody can use the data on it.

Unfortunately, everybody things, that it's an expensive thing, and difficult to implement. Well not true, a good solution starts about +/- 60$, ...

If somebody want to know more or thinks this could use an article, shoot!

Michael,
A fire safe is only really any good against Paper, but are not generally rated to protect tape data in high heat.

As mentioned by an MVP on SMB Amsterdam late April the best place to put your backup is under your pillow

Yes, but then the heat from you're hot head will damage the data on the tape and make it unreadable.
