Has anyone had any experience with REV backup drives & if so, are they recommended?

Jonathan,

Do a search on this site and you will see not many like REV drives...

I like them, along with Dells PowerVault RD1000 drives.  I have quite a few clients servers that I'm using the REVs on.

One thing...stick with internal SCSI if you can, I don't like them on USB.  Depending on your server and it's hardware..you may have some hiccups with USB.
Also make sure your servers BIOS is updated..and that your REV drive does have the latest firmware also.

Fast, and durable.

Hi Jonathan,

I have several clients using the REV drives. Mostly the 70Gb external USB variety. We specified the USB version after experiences of having outages from internal HP/Compaq DLT35/70 drives. Our thinking being that at least with an external USB you can hot remove and re-add the device without a server outage...

On the plus side the REV drives are pretty cheap and quick. The main downside we have had lately is that early firmware versions have been causing the drive to damage the cartridges. There is now a release to address this which we have been rolling out. Iomega are honouring the warranty on damaged cartridges as well. Just a pain to have to arrange a ticket for each failed one and wait around 14 days for delivery. If you go down this road I would add a spare 2/3 cartridges into the quote (as you probably would with tapes) so that you are not caught short in case of damages.

Otherwise they work well - we usually set them up with the CA Arcserve SBS edition which works well with the REV. Occassionaly the eject command sent from the software is ignored by the drive but not really a major issue.

Let me know if I can provide any further informaiton.

Regards,

Glyn.
