i currently have SBS 2003 R2 with up to date patches. The issue I am having is that it appears that the nightly back up is causing my server to lock up and it requires a reboot and the server does not usually come back on line without some intervention. The only 2 errors that are present are a dsrestor error that i think I have resolved by using the ntdsutil.
The other error was a Volume shadow copy service error event id 8211.
i checked my logs and the server last reponded while doing a backup. There is lots of space on both the physical drive in the server as well as the external drive I back up to. It is NTFS formatted and is the standard SBS backup. The back up file usually ends up around 123 GB in size and i can catolog it in the NTBackup utility
I may try to exclude an item of the back up at a time and see if that is the issue.
Has anyone else seen an issue like this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi CP,
Can you post a backup log? Is the backup always failing at the same part? What hardware are you using? What other programs are installed on the server?

It appears as though the back up is finishing but the last entery in my event log refernces that the verification process starts for the information store. It seems as though it happens every 2 days. Not sure if that has any relavence or not. i am going to try disabling the sbs back up for 3 day period but back up my files with a seperate ntbackup job with just the files being backed up. There is no other errors in the log at the time. I use a Lacie external HD for the back up and the server is a HP ML 370 server, dual core 2 GB, 4 GB ram and lots of drive space. I have BES on the server but other than that nothing outside of the standard SBS apps.

I have disabled the anti virus.
The server has done it again and it is now stuck at applying computer settings. I have tried going into safe mode and using selective start up. That did not work. It did work when I used diagnostic mode but now the server is stuck in a diagnostic mode boot up. All my services are disabled except the core services.
I am trying to set the services required to auto matic but it is not working out at all.
I a may do a server restore.
This is frustrating.

It is a HP ML 350. 4 GB ram with dual core 2 GHZ processor.
I just manually went in and manually enabled the services that I think I require. It still is hanging at applying computer settings. Any thoughts? |

| Lots of thoughts but without actual access at that server it is not easy. What happened before this began? How long was this server running and did you run the SBS BPA?

| This issue started about 2 weeks ago roughly. The system seems to stop after the back up completed. It seemed to happen every second night. I disabled the back up for about a week and and the server ran fine. I then used NT back up to back up the files and again on the second night it crashed. This time the server is not coming up at all. I can get into safe mode but anything I try after this does not work and it hangs on applying computer settings. I am assuming that something is caught in a loop but I am not sure. I have run the SBS BPA and have applied the recommended updates except for WSUS 3.0 and also Sharepoint 3 upgrade. Other than that nothing drastic has changed on the server. Do you offer any telephone support since the server is down? |

i did a recovery with the SBS install disk and I now have it back up. After reapplying the updates and a few other things I am getting one error that concerns me and I tried steps outlined at MS to fix it but no luck.
The error is:
Event ID 215
tcpsvcs (3948) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed |

Please, read:
MORE INFORMATION
You can safely ignore this logged event. No problem actually occurs during the backup process. The backup process should be completed as expected in this situation. Additionally, you can successfully restore from the backup that is created by the NTBackup utility.

Thank you for your help.
If my server crashes any more I will open up another thread with the info. So far since i repaired the install it seems to be working fine. but it seemed fine for about 2 days and then crashed 2 days there after. |

| I noticed this posting about a server that was shutting down towards the end of a Small Business Server 2003 Auto backup routine. I have had exactly the same problem with my and a customer's SBS 2003 in spite of both being re-loaded several times during the course of their history. I am backing up to various hard drives installed through a pair of hot-swap caddies. I always check that the machine can see the drives when I've had to swap them. Even when I used external USB drives, I had exactly the same problem. The other machine I spoke of has a fixed hard drive for backing up to but again the same problem. Before I got the R2 version, I still had the same problem. The symptoms described by David Adler seem identical to mine and I'm not sure anyone has solved his problem yet. I notice that if we leave a client machine switched on, sometimes/always the backup appears to work and not shut the server down. Any ideas on curing this would be great. Thanks

Hi Chris,
Is your server really shutting down during backup? Does it reboot itself automatically? At what moment does the shut down occur if it occurs during backup? What hardware in your server?

| My client is also having this problem. The backup doesn't run every third or fourth time and the server becomes completely unresponsive. They are backing up to external USB drives. I've been unable to find a fix

Hi Kathy,
Please specify the hardware of server and USB drives you are using and how many USB drives you are using. Does it always fail with the same USB drive? Does it fail at the same time?
