Thank you for your reply.  The crash seems to happen in the main immediately after the backup routine has finished.

It's a no name white box with an Intel SATA RAID controller (mirror) and a Gigabyte motherboard. Two Maxtor USB drives are used. I orignally though it was always the same drive, but now it appears it isn't. When the backup fails and freezes the server, it writes a log file of 0 bytes, so it's hard to tell what's going on. The event log doesn't log any errors except that the backup failed at approximately the same time each time. I tried changing the timing of the backup in case something was interfering with it, but it didn't help. The server owner's solution is to hit the power, which has gradually made things worse, so I'm off to restore AD today... When the server is unresponsive, if you are very patient you can log in locally (takes about 20 mins) and restart netlogon. There's plenty of room on the log drive and the Exchange drive. Reminds me of the problems with APC Powerchute v 6 (but that's not running).

Ok. Happened again after I'd got the box back up and running again. Backup on Tues and Wed ran OK but hung the server again on Thurs - same USB drive (not the one that the problem happened with last time). The server appears to be powered up, but completely unresponsive with power light on monitor flashing as it does when box is powered off.

No errors in any log. Last entry in App log was beginning backup of drive F (which is the data drive). It had apparently completed E: (Exchange) and C:. Nothing in obvious in system log . Can't see a failed backup log as it doesn't write a log when it fails.

No errors at all, not even a "Previous shutdown was unexpected" when it came back up.

This is happening every week (not on same day) and I'm at my wit's end.

Hi Kathy,

Have you checked for the mobo drivers and BIOS updates?

Yes, everything is up-to-date.

Machine had been power cycled so much that I ended up having to rebuild AD. Seems to be a problem with servers with SATA RAID and another form of mass storage device (in this case USB) as I discovered that even leaving the drive plugged in for a few days wihtout using it for backup caused the server to hang.

Our current solution is to backup to the server hard drive. Then I copy the backups to the USB drive once a week (as I'm not on site) remotely and eject the drive immediately. Not very good.
