Hi

Just wondering if anyone could give this a "ya" or "na" with regards to a migratioon method.

Currently have a no name chassis with SBS 2000 and want to upgrade to a new HP ML chassis with SBS 2003 to be installed. Could i add the 2003 as an additional DC to the exisitng Domain to be able to replicate AD over and then move Mailboxes via Exchange System manager. Once migrated, Demote the old 2000 chassis and then upgrade the Schema to 2003 Native?

I work in a large enterprise environment and have little experience with SBS so i'm unsure if my idea's are hampered by SBS's functionality or not. Alternatively if anyone has any good ideas i'm interested.

Thanks

Chris.

The 'Swing Migration' forum would be best. Don't be surprised though if everyone points you to www.sbsmigration.com no matter where you ask.

You cannot do your plan with SBS, that's why Jeff's 'Swing' process exists. SBS limitations make your plan impossible, as it stands. The quick summary of a 'swing' is that a tempDC is introduced to your existing AD to 'grab a copy' of the AD. This tempDC is then separated from the AD and traces of the original SBS are removed. The new SBS is then installed into this copy of AD and eventually dropped into place in replacement of the original server.

Jeff's process is basically a compendium of the steps involved and MS KB's, a couple of handy tools thrown in for good measure. Anyone experienced in SBS and AD could develop the process on their own (I did, before Jeff's kit was available) but you have to look at the value of your time. A few bucks to Jeff and a bit of time reading the docs vs _many_ hours to do it on your own.

Matter of fact I don't put the most value into the process documentation. To me, the fact that Jeff supports the process is the main drawcard. Should you experience a problem during the process which requires a call to MS the MS incident, dealing with only that aspect of the process, will cost more than Jeff's kit which includes support of the whole process.
