Ok... So, hopefully you can be a bit patient with me here. I am a PC tech however my experience has been on everything but servers. I have minimal experience so, please excuse my ignorance.

I will be purchasing a server... I have been looking at the 1800 tower, as the rack mount is out of the question.

The needs are fairly basic here - but I know that it's going to be a bit of a pain for me, and a learning experience.

In need of Raid.... for the back up drive...

1. This is going to be a small office of about 3 to 4 people. However will be growing in the near future to around 7-10 folks.

The needs are as follows. A good/simple back up solution. (I was thinking of Ghost) but if there is something that someone else wants to reccomend, I have no issues taking a look at it.

Wireless solution, I was thinking of a checkpoint router that I have used in many other applications - utilizing the wpa2.

Remote access from home for both the owner and 1 of his associates. Looking for a software solution here... I am a bit ignorant to this I will admit.

And I will be using Endpoint for the virus solution for the server.

I am sure I am missing something here... But That is it for now... If anyone else has set up a legal office and has some idea's that differ from this that are as simple as possible.. Those are the alternatives I seek.

Thanks!

Despite your shaking head...

SBS has adequate backup software built-in; you just need something to backup to. I’m currently using LTO-3 tape drives which are fast and capacious (and relatively expensive). It really depends on the amount of data you need to backup, the length of your backup window and the available budget.

For wireless you’ll need an access point rather than a router. How you configure things will depend on whether you’re using ISA or not.

SBS has remote access facilities (including VPN) built in.

Have you actually tried installing SBS to see how it works?

I have installed it and browsed through some of the services you speak of. I prefer to use an outside vender however for the purposes of backup and for the remoting in. The individual I will be installing this for prefers to avoid tape drives though I have talked to him abou tthe media. He just wants a nas hooked up. Explain to me why you would say I just need an AP vs. a Router? Quite curious here...

If you want disk based backup I think you'd be better off with something directly attached rather than a NAS device. You really need a system where the backups can be rotated offsite incase of something serious such as a fire. There are some nice backup devices that use laptop drives enclosed within cartridges that would be worth a look. You could also use portable drives connected via USB or eSATA. LTO-3 works well in my situation as the media is relatively cheap and offers 400-800GB of capacity.

As to wireless AP Vs wireless Router. You don't want a router as the SBS box will handle the routing (plus the DNS and other bits). You just need something that will allow the wireless clients to connect to the SBS box so they can pick up their settings via DHCP. Not a good explanation, but it's getting late and I've been drinking.
