How long would you say a server will last before it needs to be replaced?  I know that's pretty vague and sometimes people make new server purchases because of new software, but my boss says he believes every server should last 10 years and stay productive.  To me that seems pretty long for a server.  Now if nothing changes and the load on the server doesn't change then maybe that's reasonable.  But, our server has been running for about 5 years and I have been getting processor errors and overall slow responses.

So, generally what do you think?

Thanks, Mike

If you ignore the moving parts that are likely to wear out (drives and fans) I can't see why a server shouldn't last 10 years; in fact I have one server that's nearing that sort of age. It has however received memory, processor and drive upgrades over the years to keep it as a viable option. It's role has also changed over the years as more modern kit was purchased.

I wouldn't expect a machine to last 10 years in its original role without some upgrades.

I also wouldn't like to support a machine in a primary role that isn't covered by a decent onsite warranty.

Personally, I think 5 years is about the limit on the original drives - and once you're looking at replacing the drives you may as well get a new server - unless your boss pays overtime for out of hours maintenance! My current sbs machine has been running since 2003 and I'm going to replace it in December. I'll be happy to re-use it out of warranty in a non-critical role but it won't be doing any heavy lifting.
Here's some (relatively) interesting background reading http://www.usenix.org/event/fast07/tech/schroeder/schroeder_html/index.html

If all else fails, get a 10 year old computer from ebay and stick it on your bosses desk. I'm sure he'll get the picture.

Thanks to everyone who replied here.  It really helps back up what I was thinking.

As for getting a 10 year old computer for the bosses desk, he gets a new laptop every 2 years no matter what.  I guess that's just the way it goes.

Thanks,
Mike
