I had a SBS2003 Server that I upgraded to R2, and then I installed SQL2005. I am now having problems getting the Small Business Server Update Services to work. I talked to Dell and they want me to uninstall R2, but I think that would cause problems if I don't uninstall SQL2005 first. Right? So can I uninstall and reconnect Sharepoint to MSDE somehow. I really don't have experience with databases so any help is appreciated!!
Mike

Go thru Marriette's article on upgrading to R2 and SQL 2005. It shows how to dettach and reattach the Sharepoint databases. She could give you better dierections, but my sense is that you should stop the services required, dettach the Sharepoint database, copy the files she lists to a directory someplace safe, do whatever uninstall you plan, then after the reinstall, copy the files back over and reattach. I did this several times while fumbling thru the upgrade to SQL 2005 and it worked OK for me. Her article is pretty clear and has screen shots to guide you also. Good luck!
PS - there is a WSUS instance of SQL Desktop too. It may or may not show up in your list of programs to add/remove, I guess depending on how far you got previously. |

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have since re-installed the OP on this server so this is not an issue any more.
Thanks,
Mike

Can anybody offer some suggestions for how I would go about uninstalling SQL2005 from my sbs server and restoring the SHAREPOINT services to WMSDE?
I want to do this for a few reasons:
1. We have added two LOB apps, Sage CRM and Sage Pro Series 7.4, that run on SQL. Running them on the SBS box is SLOOOWW! After talking to our Sage rep moving them onto a dedicated WS2003 box would help.
2. We don't use the SHAREPOINT to store any documents that would need searching. Outside of remote access through RWW we don't SHAREPOINT at all.,
2. Without SagePro or Sage CRM on teh SBS box I don't see any reason to waste resources having SQL running on the SBS box.
Basically i would like to eliminate SQL2005 from SBS and restore the fresh out of the box WMSDE configuration.

| Anyone? Does it make it any easier if I don't care if I lose Sharepoint services?

When I initially installed SQL2005 I followed the articles posetd here. Everything worked great. Sage CRM was able to be set up to use "Windows Authentication" instead of needing the "sa" account password. ProSeries needs the "sa" account password which I never set up. On top of that running Sage CRM and the VFP version of Sage Pro Series on the SBS box has slowed my network significantly and caused some reliability problems. Because of this I am moving my SQL apps to another dedicated box where I can set it up properly from the start When I do that I no longer have any need for SQL on the SBS server. If I don't need it I would like to get it off the machine or at least disable it so it isn't fighting for resources with SBS. I have talked to our reseller about this and outside of setting up the new box they are of no help with sbs. |

| CRM and ProSeries 7.4 operate very slowly and will lock up and crash. When that happens I have to go in and manually "unlock" users that were logged in when it (usually Pro Series) crashed. I only have 10 users. |

| Did the vendor actually told you that it should not be installed on a SBS? Really, the SBS is nothing else as a Windows 2003 server with some extra bits.

No, they said it was fine. The vendor is another issue for another thread. The problem started when I initially installed the SQL on the SBS I didn't configure it correctly. I didn't choose to set up an "sa" account password. If I would have had ProSeries in mind when installing SQL and configured it correctly it would be fine, probably still slow, but it would work. Running SBS with 10 users, exchange, document redirection, WSUS, RWW, etc. already then adding Sage CRM and Pro Series we really experienced a performance hit. Microsoft's own documentation suggests that SBS really isn't the best place to be running much more than SBS itself. Look at how they are structuring SBS2008. Moving forward and learning from my mistake I would rather separate my database apps and the SBS and run two separate boxes, the existing SBS server and another Server2003 box running nothing but SQL, CRM and ProSeries.
Basically my question still stands: Can I roll back the changes made while following this article?
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Articles/tabid/266/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/211/Default.aspx article? If so how?

If you don't use Sharepoint you can just uninstall all of it and follow:
I would reinstall the companyweb otherwise the CEICW will fail. If you have completed the procedure you will have an empty companyweb and make it works without errors!

| Thank you for the reply. I have the new server up and running just waiting for the CRM people to come and move it over before I uninstall SQl from the SBS box.
