I'm having a problem with a new Laptop with Vista. At first, I had no issues with Offline Files and syncing. But, now the Vista laptop will no longer properly sync offline files - the sync results show the following result/error for every file I'm attempting to sync offline:
" The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".
I have installed SP1 and this has not resolved the issue. The XP laptops in our office don't have any offline syncing problems. Nothing has changed on the server, other than automatic updates that may have installed - otherwise, no configuration or other changes. I'm using SBS2003. I've been told this is a server issue by MS, but I don't know what could be causing this on the server.
Any clues as to why this is happening and how I can resolve?

| No meaningful errors found by running the BPA. At this point I'm already in the process of upgrading to a new server - and I went a fresh install route partly becuase of the above problem - i want to be sure it wasn't something in the way the original server was setup. I only have 7 client PCs so it isn't much more effort to do from scratch. I'll post back after this weekend once the new server is up and we'll see if the problem is still there.

Well, I installed a new server this weekend - did a scratch install of SBS2003. All is working well and I have run BPA. I'm still getting this error message. This forum has been outstanding in helping me solve lots of little problems and getting the server configured. I'm usually able to figure out computer problems with the help of forums and web searches. But, this problem - Vista syncing offline files - remains an absolute mystery to me. Anyone have ideas? Has no one else in the world gotten this specific error message - that would be a first for me . Just need to put BES on the server - but I may wait a few days to make sure everything is running correctly. |

| Don't I feel dumb. I may have solved the problem with a forum search on the Dell Vista forum - the one place I had neglected to look. Turns out the culprit is something I've encountered before on other Dell laptops - the dreaded EMBASSY Trust Suite by Wave Systems. This sofware is needed for fingerprint access, but that feature isn't on my laptop. Taking forever to uninstall...and then I need to reset the offline cache and settings. |

| not yet fixed. I'm certain Embassy Trust Suite is the source of the problem based on posts in other forums, but I can't get files to sync after removing Embassy. It took a very long time to uninstall so maybe it didn't uninstall properly. I'll have to keep researching this one.... |

| Douglas, you might find that opportunistic locking has been turned off on the server by a Windows update. You just need to turn it back on with a simple registry edit. Look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264

That's it!!!
Thank you so much - I've been pounding my head trying to resolve this - odd that it wasn't more readily accessable. I've used every possible combination of search terms and never found this. I talked with Microsoft and they said it was a server issue. Maybe I can tolerate Vista a bit more now...till MS pushes an update that breaks it again.

It can also be a problem on the workstation (as I found). If you've done everything right on the server, make sure to check the following key on the workstation(s):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\OplocksDisabled

| Yes, that is what I had to do - change this setting on the client PC. |

| Did they happen to be Dell PC's? I'm wondering if it is a factory setting, or perhaps a default within the broadcom cards. |

| Mine is a Dell PC, but file syncing worked fine when I first got the laptop and then two months later, stopped working. So, it had to be a windows update that changed the registry. |
